I was wondering if it is still necessary to drive new cars easy for a while before you start to drive normally, I know this used to be, but the salesman told me it wasn't so anymore. I'm not sure I totally trusted the guy, so I just want your opinions.

I would tend to agree with the salesman. Having worked a bit with an engine manufacturer, the surface finishes and tolerances are such that
very little "run in" is required. Engines have come a long way.

That being said, I still wouldn't "drive it like a rental" for at least a few weeks. Normal driving should be fine though.

I would still be easy with it for the first 1000 miles. No reason not to be a little more careful than needed.

uh...I went speeding off the lot in my new Altima, put 1600 miles on it in the firt weekend (drive to Wisconsin) and I didn't drive it very conservatively.....maybe that was a bad idea, but i haven't had a single problem with it yet...

LOL, I certainly hope you have no problem with a 1600 miles-car. If you are just leasing and turning it in in 3 years, go ahead and shift at redline from mile 1. However, if you want to keep it, I would take it easy for at least 500 miles. BTW, I would also change oil at 500.

Well you should break in the rear end for about 500 miles before you go begin beating the crap out of it. I'd say that after about 500 miles you don't have to treat it like a baby anymore.

Go ahead and beat the crap out of it,you will just bring more business to my line of work.

Yeah, cause the hardened steel gears in there are going to change somehow after 500 miles, right?

All parts that come in contact with each other must "mate" first (Form a wear pattern) before excessive loads can be placed on them.

This includes but is not limited to;

Engine

pistons,rings and cylinder walls

Bearings,journals and wrist pins

Seals

valve guides,stems and seats

Transmission

Pump,valves and regulators

Accumilators

Bands and clutches

servo valves

I am not even going to go into the rest of the vehicle

Just be sure to reset the computer when you feel like to begin pushing it hard after the break-in period, so it learns your more aggressive driving style
