Driving the Dell 2005FPW

I just bought a Dell 2005FPW monitor and I need to find a graphics card that can play the latest games (HL2, Doom3, etc) at its native res of 1680x1050. I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know of any sites with benchmarks of different cards at 1680x1050? I have a hard time finding those.

2. If you play games on a monitor at 1680x1050 or greater, what kind of graphics card are you using and how is it?

Thanks for the feedback.

I've got a 2005FPW connected to an AGP 6800GT, and I have no complaints. The newest games at the highest settings sometimes bog down just a bit, but not bad at all, and I could also stand to have a faster CPU as well.

I'm not really aware of any benchmarks done at 1680x1050, since it's still kinda a "nonstandard" resolution. 1600x1200 results are a good approximation (even though the 2005FPW's resolution is a little lower in total pixel count, sometimes the field of view is wider so more objects may be rendered...)

Welcome to the forums.

the 6800GT can play HL2 at 1680x1050 i overclock and play with all detail on high, 2xAA and trilinear filtering (AS). Occasionally ill drop a little below 40 but never below 30, if you disable AA you'll get good FPS but it look. Riddick which is on the doom 3 engine looks unbelievably good in widescreen mode i run sm 2.0, 2.0++ doesn't run very well. just look at regular benchmarks and its about 60% the performance at 1280x1024

Welcome to the forums.
Thanks.
I've been reading these forums for a while. Great source of information when I was biulding my computer.

The 6800GT is definitely on top of my list of cards. But I've also heard that I can buy a regular 6800 and open up the remaining 8 pipelines to match the 6800GT's performance. Is this true and if so how do I go about doing it?

Yea, you may be able to unlock 4 pipelines and a vertex shader. Although you may be able to unlock the pipelines and a vs with Rivatuner, your 6800NU will still only have 128mb DDR as opposed to the 256mb GDDR3 the 6800GT has. Also, I've heard that when people have unlocked the pipelines, artifacts and such started showing up, so they only left a vs unlocked. If you do decide to buy a 6800NU I suggest you buy a BFG 6800 OC or a Leadtek 6800NU as people have had the most luck unlocking with those two cards.

"had" to upgrade from a 6800nu to an x800xt to get playable frame rates (60fps+) on my dell 2005fpw. playing fast paced shooters (tribes, cs:s, americasarmy) and it runs really well. i did have to overclock the video memory to get real smooth frame rates though.

I'm using dual 6800GTs in SLI and it works great. Its prob overpowered. As I need to really crank up the AA/AF to bring my games FPS down

A single 6800GT or X800XL (or better) would be fine. No less than something in the 6800GT speed though. The X800XL is a little slower, but not enough to take it out of the running. Take either of those or above and you'll be set.

probably better to get a crt if you're serious about gaming. ($0.02) the colors are a lot deeper and more vibrant. lcds looks washed out. just compare the specs and you'll see

Naw, I'm not that hardcore or old school enough to stick with a crt. The 2005FPW is just too sexy. Thanks for the input everyone. I was about to go with a 6600GT until I did the right thing and asked around first. So whats the final verdict on geting a 6800 NU and opening up the remaining 4 pipelines? How close does it come to the 6800GT?

you don't need to be old-school or hard core, just do something simple which many people fail to do - look at them side by side (while running 3dmark demo) and you'll see the difference

I'm running on a 2005FPW with a 6800 ultra, seems to work fine.

As far as finding benchmarks go, just go by the numbers you find for 1600x1200 and you'll get a good estimate

6800gt, x800xl are fine for running it with quality settings. Depending on what you play and how much aa/af you use you could run it with less

please keep this kind of crap out of this thread. This thread has nothing to do with your opinions on colors.

I'm running it with a 9700pro and it works fine with half life 2. IN fact, i ran it through my laptop with a mobility radeon 9700 and it ran half life 2 fine at 1680 x 1050... with medium settings though.

funny how you people get so defensive about your precious cheapo dell lcd. Obviously something is messed up with it. Housecat at one point asked me "my lcd is not ghosting, so I'd like to know what I'm missing ?" but when I told him, of course he did not address the issue and just said "I don't give a *** about what you think". First, let me clarify the feeling is mutual, second you've got a really childish way of making your case - hence it's not even worth arguing with you. Face it, facts are facts.

Sure, but you are just a jacka$$.
What you told me? LOL you dont think I've had a CRT like you? What an idiot.

You are so bitter that you are stuck on a CRT still that you will chase people down and hound them. You are straight up loser.
This is my last reply to you, go find someone else to argue with moron.

great, I was hoping not to hear from this internet freak ever again. Good to hear it will finally shut up and go play with your lcd. Moron is understatement in yours case. And it's pretty obvious to evryone you never had a good crt, your pathetic lies are completely obvious. But feel free to believe what you want, however stupid it might be [cat pwned]

Of course. I'm using 9700 Pro with my 2001FP and I just ordered 2005FPW for my wife. She uses Radeon 9100.

sure it'll handle it, but you won't be able to play at the native resolution with all the eye candy turned on.
