Buying a house for the first time means lots of initial payments for things you'd not expect... How much did it cost to furnish your house? So far its costing me a bundle

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=883&f=12464 Table $800

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=891&f=3393 Chairs x 4@220each

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=960&f=13027 Couch $4300

http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1266&f=21614 Bamboo rug(black) $300

With tax and shipping, nearly 7k...

Still need bedroom furniture and furniture for the den... ugh... still have no HDTV or stereo or ceiling fans or water softener or water filter, or accent furniture(ottoman or coffee table)...

What about your place? How much was it for you? or did you all get stuff from parents and craigslist?

Hehehehehe, you're paying retail for furniture? No wonder.

I've got nothing against nice furniture or your taste in it. But buying it from Crate & Barrel is akin to buying jewelry from a mall jewelry store.

You have expensive tastes! For example, I would never have paid $4300 for a couch. Our sofa was ~$800 and I still felt the pinch. (It was Broyhill or some similar brand, and made-to-order in the USA.)

We were in our house for about 3 years with basically nothing but my bachelor couch and janky queen bed. Then we dropped 17k cash to furnish the house with decent furniture (got a huge discount too from Nebraska Furninture Mart stock holder sale). Furniture makes a home more homey but I wouldn't go into debt over it.

Then don't shop at Crate and Barrell. There are plenty of independent furniture dealers that sell higher quality furniture for much, much less. You're paying an incredible markup at Crate and Barrell.

I paid probably about $7k too, but I have a lot more furniture than that. There are a lot of great furniture dealers in Atlanta.

Just take your time and buy quality stuff. We spent little over 10k for our bedroom set from Ethan Allen. 3k more for the rugs.
You can easily spend the cost of your house furnishing your home.

Sofa looks nice but WAYYY overpriced. I got a leather sofa new for $800, and that was from a store in San Francisco.

If you're having problems furnishing your home, talk to an interior designer. They'll be able to help you out with suggestions and probably recommend places in your area to get great deals.

I went to at least 6 other stores around tucson looking for some place to buy nice and comfortable furniture... didn't find anything as comfortable as the one at crate and barrel... i figure that if i get anything else i'd always regret not getting the huntley... so i caved

So Crate & Barrel is the only place that sells new, quality furniture?

Those pieces aren't even unique to Crate & Barrel.

Furniture Buying Tip #1
The places with the best furniture deals have the smallest showrooms.

When I was shopping for my bedroom furniture, I went to two big retail stores to check out different styles, but when it came time to make my purchase I went to an independent dealer who had almost no floorspace but ordered the pieces directly from the manufacturer. Needless to say, I paid an average of 30% less over various pieces I bought.

Nothing wrong with that. Comfort is paramount, but you can at least save on the chairs, tables, etc. The independent dealers have a lot of variety and are often willing to negotiate incredible deals. Spend where you need to spend, save where you can.

Good luck and congrats on the house!

7k on furniture? I haven't even spent that much on a car. How much have I spent? Zero. There are always people giving away furniture.

Personal rule: Don't spend a ton of money on something that depreciates very quickly, is difficult to move, and is difficult to sell

I guess getting one I think i'll be happy with for 7+ years is better than getting different ones i'm just "okay" with every 3 years

feb 27 is the delivery date

yeah I plan on using my hand-me-down furniture for a LOOOONG time..at least until I get married and the wife objects (like I said, a LOOOONG time)

good thing its pretty nice stuff, hand-me-down king-sized bed, big office desks, round kitchen table for 4, chairs (well these don't look that great, but are totally functional)

best part is the black cloth? couch..every girl that sits on it, raves about it =) usually we aren't just sitting for too long, that thing gets abused and keeps on giving..thank you uncle!
