It does seem like that couch is on the high side. Is there something unique about it that commands such a high price? I think my leather sofa and love seat were about half that, and they seem to be of very good quality.

I love this place.

Honestly, this is nothing more than a bragging thread from him. Linking all his furniture, stating the costs, and saying he's above getting stuff off of craigslist.

But hey, if I had money I'd probably brag too.

bingo

and yeah, the whole past month i was searching for stuff i scoured craigslist and inquired for a few... i got the cash now, i want some good stuff that i'd use for many years

He totally deserved it. He paid more than $4k for a chenille sectional sofa from fscking Crate and Barrel. If he really needed to dump the $4k, he could have given it to me, and I could've picked him up the same couch at Wickes' for less than $2k and pocketed the difference.

Here's a tip for the OP: you don't drop that kind of money on furniture unless you're picking out the colors with a professional and delivery takes 6-8 weeks (because they have to custom-build it for you).

I will say the $11 triple prime burger at Ruby Tuesday is damn tasty. I wasn't paying, of course.

I guess the whole point is that if you lay down 4,300 for something you don't have to worry about them replacing it. Otherwise, why buy something like that?

It's like these morons who buy high-end unreliable cars and then b!tch when it sits in the garage for weeks. Well, you shouldn't have been a doof in the first place.

Well, at least high end model cars come with style and excitement!

I just cant justify spending $4k on a couch. It just something you sit on.

I can justify it, but not from C&B or Pottery Barn. Ethan Allen, probably. It's all a matter of relative value.

It's like when my wife and I were up in NYC the last time. We were in times square looking for some eats. Saw TGIF and went in. A burger was $17. I called BS and just got up and left (much to my wife's chagrin). We walked half a block and went to an Irish pub. A burger was $8 and was 100x better than some pre-made trash TGIF burger.

I'll pay $17 for a damn good burger, but no way in hell I will pay $17 for a TGIF burger. It's all relative value.

Agree, theres a maximum amount of money you pay for quality, after that amount, its all branding and marketing.

Heh, the furniture I previously mentioned came from Mrs. B's, NFM's discount/clearance store

This thread plus MichaelD getting owned in the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan thread =

Dude, you have way too much money.

My wife and I just bought a 3 seater leather (not pleather or vinyl) couch brand new for $600.

It has nothing to do with having way too much money. Hell, in two weeks I get my bonus check and I won't be doing stupid crap like this.

Yikes man you way overpaid. Crate & Barrel is a rip-off.

Paid $1500 for our couch/loveseat at Macys. Got 40% off MSRP and an extra 10% off by applying for a Macys card.

Bedroom set was spendy though. $4,500 but got solid cherry & veneers with triple dovetailed drawers on metal sliders. 2-nightstands, sleigh bed - queen, lingerie chest, dresser + mirror, chest of drawers, Armoire, and hope chest. Retailed for $9,000.

After we bought a new house '05 my wife decided that all our stuff was crap. Over the next year we spent about $20K for living room, bedroom, and dining room furniture.

Livingroom:
2 steelcase couches
2 recliners
end table
coffee table
stuff to hang on walls

Bedroom set:
Queen bed
two large dressers
two nightstands

Dining room set
I'm sure you guys remember the ceiling

there is a difference between what you are doing and the right way to do it IMO...

1) don't go to crate and barrell. Use their ideas and concepts and get things similar for half the price...which is just as nice of furniture.
2) do you know an interior designer? get the discount

My couch was roughly $2,500 and the coffee table was $200 more. Needless to say, I am engaged to an interior designer and we got zero discounts on these two items. She comments all the time about how people spend an enormous amount of "extra needless" money when she works with them

Hehehehehe, you're paying retail for furniture? No wonder.

Well, its a brand new house, might as well go with brand new QUALITY furniture

So Crate & Barrel is the only place that sells new, quality furniture?

Those pieces aren't even unique to Crate & Barrel.

Furniture Buying Tip #1
The places with the best furniture deals have the smallest showrooms.

When I was shopping for my bedroom furniture, I went to two big retail stores to check out different styles, but when it came time to make my purchase I went to an independent dealer who had almost no floorspace but ordered the pieces directly from the manufacturer. Needless to say, I paid an average of 30% less over various pieces I bought.

good point.

I tend to like Value City Furniture
for some things. We have this bedroom suit from them and it has a really high build quality.

I learned a couple of things shopping around for some of our furniture. Try and get real wood if you move around a lot. In my case moving with the military shredded anything I had left over from college in a couple of moves.

I usually do a scratch test on the finish of the floor display with my fingernail (on an inconspicuous place) It tells me a lot on how it will look down the road with two kids.

I like to look under the drawers or behind the pieces for a manufacturer. Often the sell to a lot of different showrooms or even directly on the website.
