I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I spent that much on furniture. Especially if I didn't have the electronics!

I'm gonna have trouble spending like $2000 on furniture when I get back.

I got a nice loveseat/couch combo for $100 at the yard sell (was a nice set too)

Still looking at a 21" (iirc) tv

I do have a nice Log bed, but that's because we found someone throwing it out (these are like 10-12 inch diameter logs)

tbh though, OP is getting caught up in the rat race. I'm a cheap sucker. It's me, my wife, 2 kids in 1400 SF house, and that's plenty of room. We don't have that nice of furniture, but it's related more to the 2 year old then the original price we could afford better if we wanted, it's just not a priority to us. We should be debt free except the house end of 2k7 if things go well, and then working on the mortgage for about 12 years and then debt free. The nice thing about my house is that my heating bill this winter is $100 total (plus a bit of work)

Couch is highway robbery. You could have bought it for $3000... but everything else seems good.

futon, couch, love seat, ottoman, tv stand, computer desk, and 1 dresser. total of ~ $1975 including fabric protection, tax and the like.

poker/dining table, hutch, 2 beds, 3 dressers ~ free from relatives. my family likes to share.

in my old apt, we had bookcases, a water bed, entertainment stand, kitchen table, and a sectional sofa that were all given to us for free. then we passed it along. when we moved into our house we got a couch and recliner that we just recently gave to some friends of ours that just got their own place. recycling is great. new furniture is fun too, if you've got the funds.

I don't remember all of it off the top of my head but about 6K for the bedroom, 5K for the dining room, and then another 4k for the living room, give or take...we also had alot for the others rooms from my wife's old stuff.

That's crazy.

In the 14 years we have been married, the only furniture purchases we have made were:

1) $75 for a used couch when we were first married.
2) $1100 on a Queen bed + frame
3) $300 on California King foundation
4) $150 on a computer desk
5) $80 audio cabinet

In the interim, we have used hand-me-downs sofa sets from my parents twice. We inherited our dining room table (that we never use) from my grandmother when she died. We also got our current California King hand-me-down mattress from my parents to go on the foundation we just bought.

Other than that, we have never purchased any furniture.

In my room (apartment)

Twin bed: $149 at Ikea WEWT!
Chest of drawers - $149 @ Ikea
Desk: One of those folding tables 6-footer from my garage. Probably not that expensive
Cornerpiece: Free from friend! I know it's an Ikea product that costs $89 regularly, but when I went in the summer it was on sale for $29.
Chair: $79 from Costco
Bookshelf: $79 from Ikea

YAYUHhhhhhhhhhh

Okay, this is my cheap crap though. I can't imagine how much my parents spent on furniture in the house. We got tons of stuff from Ethan Allen. I know that my custom built desk in my room alone probably costs more than my furniture in my room in my apartment combined =P I'm sure all the oak furniture I have in my room at home also adds up to quite a bit.

"Big Man" La-Z-Boy recliner in leather - $1400
leather couch and chair - $1200

2 Target solid pine desks for workstations - $100 each

$400 California King bed

That's it.
