So Drudge reports has this headline in link to an article.

'Jobless claims rise sharply...'

and the article reads

Jobless Claims Go Higher; Income Surges, Spending Up

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week stayed in a range consistent with job growth and incomes rose in December by the most in eight years, mildly positive signs for a still-fragile economy.

The data suggests points to some underlying momentum in the economy despite a surprise contraction in gross domestic product during the fourth quarter, which largely came from temporary factors.

Yeah, the "underlying momentum" is the trillions of dollars printed with nowhere useful to go. Meanwhile, prices continue to rise while wages stagnate.

Drudge's headlines don't always match the article for accuracy, but in this case the article's headline appears to be quite similar to his own.

Drudge headlines are increasingly misleading. I've contemplated starting a blog ripping them apart but never acted on it.

From the first sentence in the article:

"The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid rose sharply last week but remained at a level consistent with moderate hiring."

Article says "Americans seeking unemployment aid rose sharply" and Drudge headline says "Jobless claims rise sharply..."

Dishonest indeed

this wording is not in the article. It is however in a comment from some hours ago.y conclusion is therefore that cnbc changed the content of the article.

Interesting, CNBC change to the Reuters article. It was an AP article, which has that quote in it. I say Drudge is definitely at fault for this.

Really calling Drudge out? How about you look at MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, Huffington Post, etc... for all their biased reporting. They don't even need to change headlines as they have more op-ed bullshit than any other "news site" ripping the right. I refuse to visit any of those sites just on the basis of not adding to their web traffic.

Huffpost is terrible, they embrace the new form of internet journalism which thinks headlines, rather than being condensed and highly instructive, are instead vague and exaggerating to get you to click.

This is exactly what's wrong with this place.
Really? So I suppose claiming that 'Jobless claims rise sharply...' is a dishonest headline for an article that reads "Jobless Claims Go Higher" is what's right with this place? By that same token, I suppose describing a contraction in GDP as growth would just be good, responsible journalism, eh?

If you want an echo chamber, both ends of the political spectrum have plenty.

Everyone likes to throw Matt Drudge's name around in order to get attention for themselves. The fact is, unemployment has been high for the past 4 years and is likely to get worse based on the policies of the current administration. It is not "momentum" in economic growth if the unemployment rate is being stabilized by the removal of millions of people from the workforce if they would rather have a job.

I guess when President George W. Bush was in office, a lot of people went crazy with "Bush Derangement Syndrome." I thought after he left office, people would get over it, but it seems to have morphed into "Obama Halo Derangement" now.

And what are you basing your assessment on exactly? If you think the unemployment rate has been stabilized due to people leaving the workforce you are factually incorrect. Estimates are that the US needs to add about 130,000 jobs a month to keep up with population growth. Best estimates for 2012 per month job growth right now are at 181,000 per month. That means that if the unemployment rate has been stable over this time the exact opposite of what you are claiming has been happening.

To get something like that wrong, make a sweeping judgment about the economy, and then call everyone else deranged is not an auspicious start for you, haha. I'm interested to hear more about how you think all the people who support the Kenyan Muslim Communist Fascist Terrorist are out of touch with reality though.

I'm interested in why you'd take such a swipe at a new poster by claiming crap they never said.

Agree, unemployment has been high and the government has been fudging the numbers around to make the situation look better than it actually is. The situation will get worse because the policies right now are not working and are providing temporary "solutions" but long term problems.

People have given up looking for a job and those people aren't included so the unemployment looks lower than it actually is.

It is dishonest to one side but just fine to the other side. There is no true objectivity anywhere; therefore, if you look close enough, you will find everyone reports according to their beliefs. This is true of NPR, Drudge, whoever.

Just more proof that conservatives need to make up their own reality that suits them (aka living in a bubble)

Like everytime I see one of these dumbass emails or posts on facebook about how some celebrity went on a conservative rant, or some tin foil sensationalist nonsense I just become more convinced that these people really do live in another world.

Just look at the 2012 election. Remember all the right wingers so convinced that they were gonna win and they had Dick Morris spewing his nonsense about a Reagan-esque landslide. It just goes to show you that the right wing media has reached a point where they don't care about the legitimacy of their claims because they know that their audience isnt going to have some sort of epiphany and figure out that they're all full of shit. Instead they just will keep listening regardless of how many lies and half truths they get called out on because the reality is that it's what they want to hear.
