DSL Internet problem

I have two laptops, a TV and Xbox, a phone and a kindle, all sharing the same problems. Symptoms include extreme internet lag; Google Chrome error screens asking to reset my router or refresh; same symptoms while plugged directly in either the router or the modem. I ran two separate virus/malware scans (Kaspersky and Window Defender), nothing. I called AT&T, and they can find no problems. Can a virus enter one computer and affect all other machines? I don't see this being the case because same problems using both laptops plugged directly into modem, so not necessarily an affected router, and kindle and xbox having lag or no connection. Could someone be using my internet remotely? Could it be AT&T? What should I try (I know a little bit about fixing computers, building my own rigs, etc., but I am stumped).

Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): The server refused the connection.
I also get error 105; and also Cannot display webpage error

Can you access the setup page in the router to reboot it? If not, you can try to disconnect the power and restart it. In fact, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to power cycle the modem, then once it is back up, restart the router to see if that makes a difference.

Speed test is posted above. I have not reset the router. This is the 4th time we have had this problem, even had all my laptops fitted with new HDD because we thought it was malware. By the way, the laptops work from other locations on WiFi but not at my home. AT&T said they see nothing wrong from their end. I may have to cancel service. When the router is not turned on, and we just use the modem directly, same problems. Could be the modem, not sure. Also, this has happened with every computer we have owned in 3 years. Also affects all internet based electronics like I stated above.

what model modem, what model router.

more than likely an AT&T issue. It never matters if they say "looks good from our end"..ISP's lie as part of their procedures.

Based upon what you are saying, it sounds as if this is either a problem with the modem, the line, or your internet connection. In short, the problem is with AT&T's installation and/or equipment and not yours. Were it me, I'd make them send out a service person to check everything.

Like ch33zw1z said, what is the specific model of modem you have? It might be possible to find a cheap replacement modem on eBay. However, I can't see wasting the money to buy one until you can be sure the line and DSL connection on the deathstar side is properly working.

If you're leasing your modem from ATT, get it replaced ASAP. this should be of no cost to you, leasing means ATT provided it, it's their responsibility to make sure it's working.

Your speed test results may be on target with what your're paying for, but the fact that it took 6 tries to get there would make me suspect the modem. The line into the house may be testing good from ATT's side, but if the modem is flaky then they might not notice any problems..

Reading over what you did, the problem is somewhere between the modem and AT&T. Connection Refused is a tricky one, usually indicating that the request *did* go through to the destination, but the server didn't like something about it and refused to send back the requested data. "Cannot display the webpage" is the de-facto page you get when you don't have internet connectivity. DSL is crappy, but refreshing a page five times to get a single good request is excessive.

First thing i'd try is to get them to replace the modem with a brand new one. If that doesn't resolve it, it's most likely an issue with the lines coming into the building or in the immediate area. At my last job we had an AT&T supplied dedicated DSL line as the second connection for our video conferencing system. When it went down, I spent well over a month trying to nag their support into looking into it. They gave me plenty of "after hours deep packet inspections" and "everythings fine from our end!" BS. When I finally got a tech sent out to the site, he noticed the line outside the building was damaged while driving up and had it fixed before he even came in to say hello.

I wouldn't be worried about malware causing it. Your Xbox and your tablet are running totally different operating systems than your PCs. Even if malware spread from PC to PC, those two would still work fine as they would be unaffected by that particular strain of malware. Since they all do it, it's a connectivity issue.

Now for no apparent reason, after returning from trying my laptop's internet connection at another house (two houses, internet worked from both), both laptops work fine. Can someone outside the home be sending a signal, interfering with my internet? Maybe the modem is going out, albeit slowly?

Could be the modem, could be the router, could be the line. I would go to broadbandreports.com and use their smoke ping test and see if it's the line. Sometimes with DSL you can have water saturation get into the line. If smoke ping comes up clean then I would suspect the modem or router. I would plug directly into the modem and see what you get. if that is still flaky then it's the modem. http://www.broadbandreports.com/smokeping
