DSL Modems Standardized Yet?

I'm about to sign up for DSL and I need to know if the modems have been standardized yet, and if so what is the standard. Since I have to pay about $199 for the modem (Paradyne) if I do sign up I want to know if I would be able to use if for another company if I had to switch over.

G.Lite is ratified, the problem is that most people haven't made the change to G.Lite on their DSLAMs yet. Hope that helps.
