Dual 19" vs. Single 24"

As I slowly convince myself that spending $800 on a monitor is fine...

I start to backtrack. I mean, I could get TWO 19" lcds with better response times, yada yada yada, for LESS than I could get ONE 24 incher.

I know, I know, you're all like, but the 24" is teh b0mb, it mad r0x0rz, etc.

But honestly, what are the advantages of having the one bigger display over having two (with more overall viewable area) monitors.

Keep in mind, I do game some (CS) but I also spend a good amount of time developing software.

So, thoughts?

I say go dual 19, or even better tripple 17!
Unless you are going to watch a lot of movies, and do little office work,
you re better off with dual or tripple screens, check out UltraMon software as well, google it.

The fact is that 17'' and 19'' have the same resolution, and multiscreen usage is an addiction,
once you start, you will never go back. Unless all you do is watch movies on your pc, then 24'' IS the better choise.

So: browsing, programming, office work, and general multitasking, go dual or tripple.

I would be more inclined to go dual 17" to save a little cash, a little desk space, and have a better picture due to smaller dot pitch.

Except in limited circumstances sitting relatively far from a monitor, I don't 'get' the whole 19" monitor thing at all; users stopped putting up with dot pitches that large on crts years ago.

I would go the 24". With dual monitors, you get a big strip down the middle of your viewing area where the monitors join. Also, it's not as good for gaming, because the aiming recticle should be right where the monitors join.

I have one 19" and one 24"
if I had a choice, one 24" or two 19".... definetly one 24"

and then later when 24" become cheaper you can buy another one if you want to

I had two 17 " LCD's side by side. swapped them for a 2005.

no doubt the best decision.

If u use the comp primarily for office work though like photo editing, spread sheets etc then dual LCD can be better. I just got bored of it after a while.

Here's my current setup. I have one 19" crt at home (at 1280x1024, so the same as native 19" lcd would be).

At work I have dual 19" crts.

So right now I'm used to the dual screen setup - and it is absolutely great for software development. I like the idea of a widescreen 24" because when I watch widescreen movies on my computer at home much of the 19" non-widescreen display is wasted, whereas all 24" of pixelated widescreen goodness would be used.

So I'm still on the fence. And I'm still waiting on the specs of the upcoming Dell 2407wfp as well...

Well I still use a quality 19" CRT for the games.

My dream monitor will be a Dell 24" as soon as prices get reasonable. I plan to replace my CRTs with my 18" Dells. When that happens my other 18" will have the 24" next to it. Well have to dream a little bit more. Trying to build another AMD dual core. I figure another 2 months, maybe. When the newer 2407 comes out, I can hope that the 2405s get cheaper. Well. well, we I can still dream........

dual montiors will have more space than a 24" monitor this is why duals are good for office work. But not good for movie viewing.

I'm also in this predicment. I do alot of graphic work, but i would like to watch movies too. Maybe dual 20"/24"? lol

i don't get the whole dual monitor gig. as rod said, shouldn't the aimer or whatever be right on the black strip between the two screens? plus, wouldn't it be weird to have half of your gun/weapon separated by a 2" gap that joins it to the other half? just my thought. you could always go single 20" for $500

Ya let's encourage spending more on computer hardware than a car Last time I checked, humans had 2 eyes not 4 and spending on 2 dual-link graphics cards isn't cheap either. With a 30 inch display you'll be throwing away $800 SLI setups every year just to get sustainable framerates. Not to mention there is no way sitting in front of this much real estate will not have a negative impact on your vision.

OP, if you are into doing some work on your computer and occasional gaming, dual screens might be better for that. If you are more into watching movies and gaming and dont need to manipulate data and worksheets quickly, 1 monitor is the way to go.

Go for 17" at 1280x1024; 19" at the same res looks like pita bread sized pixels -- remember that a 17" lcd will easily equal your 19" crt in actual viewability.

I can see the basic logic here: 24" is nice for movies. Dual / triple is nice for development. Put it on a balance and see which side is more important, and money issues can also tip the balance...

The thing I need to remember is that I could always ebay whatever I get if it doesn't satisfy me!

At his work, my brother gave up 3 x 21" CRTs for ONE 17" (maybe 19"?) LCD. And he's never looked back.

'Nother question: would my ATI Radeon 9500 Pro have any problem driving the 2405/7?

my 9500pro has no problem. i'm not playing fear though either...

Of course theres allways...best of both worlds... dual 24"s
