I installed a new hdd on my comp and have tried to load another OS on to the new hdd to make the system dual boot, each drive is set as master on each controller pri and sec. the problem is when I boot into windows I keep getting reg errors it will reboot and boot into windows and see both drives but any changes I make to one ie. changing desktop settings it shows up on the other hdd in windows. I thought that if I went into bios and booted directly to the new hdd that os would load but it only seems to boot to C drive.

Which operating systems are you using, and which drives are they on?

This little detail makes a huge difference.

The Operating systems are on seperate hard drives.
I have one win98 that came with my wifes computer and a copy of win98 that came with my computer which was destroyed by fire when I loaned it to my brother , of which I salvaged the hdd and still retained my win98 cd. I assumed since win98 was no longer on another system i could format my hdd and load win 98 onto another system ie 2 seperate hdd's with win98. the first hdd on the pri cntrller and set to master, and the other hdd on the secondary ctrller set to master, then go into bios and boot directly to that hdd be it d or c, an option with my mainboard epox mvp3g. It has not worked so I ended up reformatting the drive and slaving it in. I just wanted to know if it is possible to dual boot the same OS or is that not permitted ?
Anyways the two times i tried it all I could get was reg errors. Perhaps trying another OS on the other drive. I just don't like messing with the user profile option.

You could do it two ways. One. Have each drive as master on its own IDE controller, drive #1 on the primary IDE and drive #2 on the secondary IDE controller. You would select the drive you want to boot from the motherboard BIOS, selecting only the primary or secondary controller, but not both controllers at once. You will need a CDR on each IDE controller or use a separate controller card or even an old ISA sound card with a CDR connector. Clumsy but it works. The second way is to use Boot Magic installed on the primary controller drive and the second drive as a master on the secondary IDE controller. As the computer boots it will ask you what drive you would like. It has to be with two drives, not Win 98 on two different partitions of one drive. I have done it by coping (not installing) the entire first drive to the second drive. Then uninstalling any programs I didn't want on the second drive for a kids computer. This way I can boot to the 1st drive for all my junk and boot to the 2nd drive for the Reader Rabbit kids stuff. Rick
