it is possible to connect both with recent Nvidia motherboards and get a 2 Gb connection, but unless the computer is a highend server that is doing some massive work then there is no benefit to having the extra connection, especially since most cable modems go at 7 Mb and 1 Gb connections would not privide a benefit over a 100 Mb connection

no, it's pretty much a marketing gimmick, because if it was a high end server, you wouldn't be using consumer class H/W, and would understand when/how to use dual nics.

huh? I did not say the nvidia motherboards that recently came out were high end servers. I supossedly works but there is no reason anyone would want to use it, I am sure it can benefit someone trying to go past 1 Gb, but I am not sure who would want to do that with a regular nvidia m/b

The modern nvidia chipsets support 802.3ad (Link Aggregation) which means that you can connect both. That is, of course, assuming that you have a switch that supports 802.3ad (which your router doesn't, I would bet money.)

The problem with 802.3ad is that a single connection is limited to 1 port, meaning you'll never use both connections unless you have 2+ people pulling from you (or you pulling from 2+ people.)

Bottom line is that 1gbps > 7mbps, which means there is no reason to do it.

Weakest chain in a link....

You're connection will only be as fast as the connection at the other end. If you have another comp with a 2Gbps connection then it will be worth doing. Otherwise no. But then again your switch is probably only 1Gbps so again it won't matter.
