Dumpster Diving? anyone try it?

I was just reading the Linux-hacker forums (iopener ones) and theres always people posting their finds in their latest dumpster dives...i was wondering has anyone tryed this out...sounds crazy that people throw away that much good stuff I am intrested...anyone ever do this?

Of course! Just 3 months ago I found a perfectly working 15" Acer monitor and ironing board in great shape. Dumpster diving is cool!

Nope. Curbside driveby's sometimes, and occasionally I'd get some stuff off the old technology to-the-trash pile at work, but, never dove in a dumpster.

Yup, and got thrown out of them by the cops. Friend was barred for life from the Princteon college campus because of it as well.

A friend of mine has a roommate who has been doing this pretty regularly in Northern VA. You would not believe the kind of stuff that dot bombs pitch in the trash. He pulled about twenty laptops out of one dumpster (they were P266s or something), a pair of VOIP routers, and a pretty cool 6" LCD.

Once when I was saving for a printer I did this.........He's right, just brush the ants away and you're good to go..........stay away from the mexican pizza's...........they get soggy too fast......

My friend met his girl friend while out dumpster diving............they get a along great (lucky guy).........He's saving to buy her some teeth now.....

There was a story a few months back in our local paper, The Tennessean about some guy who wold dumpster dive near Vanderbilt university after semester breaks. He would find PC's, VCR's, TV's, etc. Outgoing students would just toss the stuff. I am sure the guy has lots of competition now after the article.

Me.... I will stick to finding my stuff on the store shelf.

when i was 15 (4 years ago), my ~friend~ convinced me to go dumpster diving with him and some other friends @ ameritech. We weren't really sure what we were looking for, but we were grabbing all sorts of printouts and manuals. I'm not sure what the kid ever did with the stuff, but that was the most retarded thing i'd done in my life.

I used to go dumpser diving all the time when I was 16-18. I remember getting like 300 videos from blockbuster Before tigerdirect got a compactor, we used to get the best stuff from there.

Buisnesses do toss out good stuff all the time. I have not been diving in a good 4-5 years.

back in the day i used to dumpster dive at a bike shop...i was like 12....i built damn near complete bikes and sold em from them parts. trust me i easily got 600$ worth of stuff in the dozen or so trips i made.

I passed what looked to be a PERFECTLY nice golf bag that somebody had set out next to their trash can on the way home from work yesterday. This wasn't some cheapo bag either. It looked to be a NICE, black Titleist bag. Maybe it had a dead skunk in the bottom or something. But judging by the way the former owner had placed it NEXT to the trash can right out on a main cut-through street it was almost as though he was asking someone to take it.

I probably would've stopped or come back later but by my wife gave me an awesome looking Ogio bag for Christmas a couple years ago

I look in before I dive! Have not been in a lot of years, but have found some cool stuff. Got a whole set of decent golf clubs from one. Used to go through the schools dumpster after school was out. Lots of teachers threw away good office supply stuff. My friend found a gun in one once and he kept it. Probably stashed there after a shooting or something bad like that.

I remember in college at the end of Spring semester when a lot of people would be moving out of their apartments/houses/dorms for the summer there would be ALL sorts of crap out on the curbs. Most of it was junk (as college students typically get hand-me-downs or just destroy new stuff) but given the sheer quantity of stuff being tossed out there was still quite a few good pieces of furniture and other stuff in the mix. It usually took the garbage trucks several weeks to get it all. A lot of the people and students in poorer areas of town would flock over to the area and go through everything. I think they actually hauled off more than the trash company. The same thing probably happens at a lot of non-commuter schools.

I did this with some friends when I was younger and they started charging us too, lol. It is not as easy as you might imagine, hehehe.

I've got a cousin that is "deep" into dumpster diving. He likes to hit the University of Oregon campus after the spring semester (or trimester or whatever they have). So when I was recently down in Oregon, I went with him.

Amazingly enough, there was a steady flow of competition.

Dumpster diving is great, as long as you go to the right places. I recommend the dumps right out behind computer or electronics stores...always cool stuff to find.
