I've enjoyed it. They could have sent out more beta keys but in the end I'm sure it got them more pre-orders when they let pre-order people get into the beta. It has similarities to Conan, good and bad. I think my biggest worry is the game is sort of a mmo with only official servers and given Conan Exiles' history I'm not sure stability will be the normal status.
Running across the sands avoiding the worms is fun, for awhile. Then it gets tedious. The map can change on server restarts which means I had to run to a different cave for a quest, adding extra run time. Once you get a bike it is supposed to get better. The questing/journey system is similar to the one they added in Conan over the past few years and at times just as buggy. Building is similar to Conan, probably better in terms of part options. Crafting mats can be pulled from your base inventory or your personal ones.
Combat is ok, I've not tried pvp and some of it is forced for at least a few missions. Some say the pvp needs work and that melee with certain combat spec is overpowered (stun lock basically).
If your specs are on the low side, the game still runs pretty well and there are a lot of graphics options to tweak if need be. Overall, it has potential but since its Funcom, be wary. I think I'm gonna stick with it for now. My big concerns are how much the DLC or cosmetic stuff gets monetized, how it might affect pvp and server stability along with how easy it will be to play with friends across servers.
The devs have apparently talked about letting people run dedicated servers in the future and I think within 1-2 years they will want to do that. For survival games, dedicated server support and steam workshop support for mods keeps these games alive.
Also, if you get the game, dont start with the trooper class. You can train that class easily within the first 3-4 hours.
Edit to add: melee combat stun lock is real. I came across several npc mobs that could melee stun lock me in the second zone. My mentat class turret saved me a few times. Oh, and the climbing is better than Conan so that is a plus. One quest is to climb up a high rock and fire a survey beacon to locate resources/npc zones on the map. Fun to be able to grapple hook up and then float down with a grav belt.
