Read just the first 3 books. I had the other Frank Herbert pocket books but never got the time to read them, got confused by the timelines.
Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are the first 3 books of Dune. After that comes God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune. Herbert died after Chapterhouse but a whole bunch of books were written by his son and co-author.

The 5 books after Dune are just not good. Yes i am aware that they have words on them. Stuff happens. It's just not good stuff.
Herbert went the way of the telenovela with the Dune saga, just keep throwing new weird shit into the story.
One thing that should clearly tell you to stay away from the Dune books is that the story of Dune ENDS in the book Dune. There is a conclusion where the protagonist completes his character arc, ascends to his goal, and defeats his enemies. That's pretty much a dead giveaway that whatever's gonna come afterwards is not going to be good.
Tolkien actually started writing a sequel to LOTR, but noticed how pointless and terrible it was early on and dropped it.
If only Herbert (and his no-talent kid) had done the same.

His sequels are fine reading, especially compared with the unreadable abominations that his kid pumps out. There was something about the elder Herbert's writing that resonated deeply with me that I found completely absent from the son's writing. I found it rather the opposite, with shallow, often repellent characterizations of figures who should have been cast in a more ambivalent light. But if you like them, I'm certainly not going to bash you for it. The universe Herbert created is an interesting enough place to want to see more of, for sure. I just wish someone more able had picked up the mantle.I don't mind the books that were pumped out after he died. Light reading that continues the universe, kind of fan fictiony. I would never say they are good by any means, but I will burn through one every once in a while if I'm on a flight or something.

Dave Filoni's masterful adaptations of Lucas' abominations would love to have a word with you. 'Cartoon version' indeed.It's kind of like the cartoon version, hahah. Too be fair I also think I've mostly read the prequels they did and not the sequels so the characters were different.

I am not feeling the body armor. Dune 1984 couldn’t figure out how to depict the weirding way so they went with the sonic modules. Not sure why you need body armor in a universe of advanced martial arts, knife fighting and personal shields.
Correct, but heavy body armor seems counter intuitive to the whole stillsuit desert survival concept, and shields were in use within the city of Arrakeen.I thought they couldn't use the personal shields in the desert of Arrakis as they drew in the worms.
