Went to a matinee, because I am cheap (need to see it on a big screen). I thought it was amazing, the spectacle and immersion were great, but I wonder how people new to the story will feel about it. There was a lack of explanation for a lot of stuff. The dialogue was hard to understand at times, I was able to fill in the things I couldn't hear with my series knowledge.

That was one of the best theater experiences ever, if not the best. 100' by 75' screen of pure epic theatrical goodness. My puny 65" TV would pale in comparison.

Everyone was well behaved.

That was Dune translated onto the big screen very well. Really good stuff, just leaving you wanting the rest of that story. That's the worst part.

I just didn't like the casting of Javier Bardem, and the sound effects of the voice in the ornithopter.

There were two parts I missed the dialogue and thought they could improve that.

I've been trying to figure out what people with no knowledge of dune are thinking. I can't see enjoying it nearly as much as someone who has. I think just the first Dune book could have been made into a trilogy to do it right. Or this first movie should have been an extra 30 minutes long to elaborate on a few things more.

Visually just spectacular. All my expectations and then some were met. I have a decent setup at home but know quite well I can't match a good theater. Certain films just loose a lot of the immersive experience when viewed at home, basically any Villeneuve film is on that list.

The production design, sets, and costuming were frankly amazing. Absolutely first rate.

I did have trouble at times hearing what actors were saying when something was going on and they were whispering but that's just partially my hearing.

I don't really have any complaints with how the story was told. Obviously having seen the Lynch version a lot I didn't require an explanation for anything. My husband who had never read or seen anything about it was able to follow the plot easily enough. They really toned down the Baron's uh various proclivities a lot but I suppose that's necessary if they wanted the PG-13 rating. Overall actors did a solid job with some better than others but I don't have any major issues.

I would like to see part 2 please.

If I were to use one only one word to characterize this movie I'd say it's majestic. Only negative imo is that Denis Villeneuve couldn't fit more events and characters from the book in this first part, but there's only so much he could fit in two and a half hours and I'm sure he had to struggle to sacrifice some things. I just hope we get part two and a third move from the second book Dune Messiah that's Villeneuve's plan.

Having just re-read the book in August, I mean this was a pretty faithful adaptation of it onto the big screen. I do think it could have benefited from another 30 minutes of run time to add more stuff in from the part of the book it covered, or just have made the whole thing as a trilogy. The book is so dense. But it was excellent and I could have kept watching part II right after.

It already clocked in at a chunky 155 minutes. I'd expect part 2 to be longer now that indications are WB will green light it, as they seem happy with the theatrical run (with China to come) and Max performance.

yeah like how did the poison gas get past personal shields?

if personal shields is supposed to slow down the rate of attack, how did aquaman slash and kill as if the other guy didnt have shields?

We watched it last night and LOVED it. Very well done.

Visually - Probably some of the best CGI ever done. Great cinematography work and location shoots.

Story wise - I was a kid and too young at the time when Dune came out in the 80s. A couple of years ago we tried to watch the Lynch version and it was just boring. I didn't even finish it. I think the flow of the new story version was easier to follow, flowed well, and I didn't have any issues following or knowing who was who. So I'd consider myself "new" to the universe and had no problem keeping up.

We watched in our HT because we have a 120" screen, 4K projector, and ATMOS audio setup that reaches THX+ reference levels. So I don't really miss anything being in the theater. It's far better.

A+ experience and movie. Glad they've given the green light to part two.

I know it was closing in on 2.5 hours but I do think for what part of the book it covered, another 30 min adding in backstory and stuff like a bit more about the Bene Gesserit, for example, would have been great.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, there will be a director's cut. I think for people who haven't read the book, the movie didn't feel like it lacked anything. But I would love to see more backstory and you never know what they cut out to get the runtime acceptable for the studio.

We are at least getting a series for Max that should flesh out that end of things.

I want to watch the fight scenes again. They got so much of the shields right, the darts and the bomb attacks on the ships slowly penetrating. I am wondering if they did do something with the melee fight coreography to compensate, hard to tell with how fast everything was. Oh, and the Lasguns! Real lasers, not that fantasy laser/projectile hybrid crap.

Seems like they aren't doing anything special with the weirding way. Stilgar did say Jessica was a weirding woman after their fight, but didn't seem like anything special. Would have liked to see something, Matrix like fast movement maybe. At least they didn't do something stupid like the weirding modules that Lynch came up with.

And I'm ready for that. Has a lot of potential that story does. This movie was good enough to kick off that show that is for sure!

i think Dune would have been better as a tv show.
ten 1hr episodes

shocked that netflix didnt try to buy the rights to dune.
they seem awash in cash since they grossly overpaid for the 2 knives out sequels. (and paying james bond $50M per movie to keep him in the franchise)

It would work very well as a series similar to how Apple is doing foundation. But you would miss out on the theatrical experience. Otherwise a trilogy of 2.5 hour films would have been best.

However, if we had to get it as a two part 2.5 hour movie, this is as good as it gets, so far, minus a couple parts of poor sound mixing making the dialogue inaudible

I bet, “Get the sand out of your ears!“, is a pretty common expression on Arrakis.

Duncan Idaho was miscast, and no version of Dune has gotten the combat right. Idaho is supposed to be a galaxy renowned swordsman. The books for all of their detail leave a lot to the imagination, but the combat is meant to be a mix of advanced martial arts and bladed weapons. The fighting in the Matrix, especially how the Agents move and later Neo, is probably closer to what Herbert had in mind.

it would take a lot to drag me away from toto
I hear the thumper echoing tonight
But Chani hears only whispers of some quiet meditation
She’s coming in, guild navigator flight
The shadow of muad’dib reflects the shape that guides me to salvation
I stopped Gurney Halek along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten war stories or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
Hurry Paul the sleeper has awaken

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred Fremen or more could ever do
I got blue eyes down in Arrakis
Gonna take some time to drink the water of life, ooh ooh

I agree that some more context/backstory would have been good but I don't think the movie suffered for that story wise and 3 hours is probably a bit long for our social media addicted brains (collectively). Maybe there's a good directors cut in our future?
