no, this thread is not about donuts!

im 1.79m, roughly 6 foot tall... (i like to say im 6 foot tho ) neways, i can barely touch the underside of the rim when i take a running jump. first off, how high up is a basketball rim? how tall do you have to be to dunk it?

ive seen ads about training shoes etc that can make even like a 5"8 person dunk a bball but do they really work???? my dream is to be able to be able to dunk a basketball!!!

10 feet up...I know two people under 6' who bought those training shoes...

One can now dunk, the other is still a foot off...it all depends on you

You don't really need the shoes, just do exercises that duplicate what the shoes do. Basically, exercise all the muscles that you would use to jump.

Yes, a basketball hoop is 10 feet high.

Do these training shoes have springs in them or what? There's a Dilbert cartoon where Dilbert is buying running shoes, and he asks the (teenage) clerk "Which ones are the best?" And the clerk answers "They're all the same, shoes are shoes". Then the manager pulls the clerk aside and whispers to him, and the clerk comes back and says "The most expensive ones are the best." Then Dilbert says "Will my current socks be compatible with the new shoes or do I need new socks too?"

Anyway, if these training shoes are for some reason not allowed in a regular basketball game, don't buy them. If you want to dunk a basketball so bad, go find a shorter hoop. They exist, I've seen them. Otherwise start exercising your legs and developing your ability to jump. Then when you can dunk a basketball in street shoes in a regulation hoop you will be much more satisfied.

A basketball goal (rim) is 10 feet high. There is no set height that a person needs to be in order to be able to dunk. Spud Webb, a famous ex-NBA basketball player won the NBA dunk contest in 1986 and he is only 5'7" tall. It's all about athleticism and work ethic essentially. If you are six feet tall and can already touch the rim, all you need to do is work really hard at trying to attain your goal of dunking by doing exercise consistently and you should have no trouble.

Those shoes that have those platforms on them can help but you still have to do a bunch of exercises with them. They are overpriced and not worth the money you pay for them. If you want to improve your vertical leap, you should start by searching the web for PLYOMETRIC JUMPING EXERCISES or something to that effect and I'm sure you'll find all you need.

10 feet eh?

so if im roughly 6 i need to be able to jump another 4 feet, thats 2/3 of my height!!! :Q

jheez!

my dad got me some of those shoes like 2 years ago when he went to america... i used them for 3 weeks until i had a snowboarding knee injury so i had to stop. i just dug them out of somewhere a couple weeks ago and realised what a waste it will be if i dont use them at all.... they still fit so when im done with my IBs in 2 months time im considering starting training again with them... i'd have 3 months before college and thats how long the programme is so i could be done by the time college starts! just in time to try and make the squad!

I used to skate when I was younger. That develops great jumping muscles. I began dunking when I was 5'7" in the 9th grade. I am now 6'2" and can touch the top of the square on the backboard with two hands. And I attribute it all to riding a skateboard.

*EDIT*

Oh yeah, your technique has a lot to do with you verticle leap. Use your arms to create momentum.

wow as i typed my reply like 4 more ppl answered!!

ok just to clear up some stuff then... i DO already own these playform plyometric training shoes so thats not an issue, really... theyre also just to work muscles etc and not to be worn during games, so theres no problem there! im just recovering from a torn ankle ligament (2 months and still not better) so im wary about starting training again... with the high school season done last week tho (we missed the playoffs by 1 spot :| ) i can rest and not force my ankle for 2 months tho...

oh russ hheheh i forgot about them arms!!

ok so thats less jumping to do!

its discourgaging cuz theres this 6 foot 5 guy on the team and he can barely dunk and its like jheez if he can barely do it and he has like 5-6 inches on me then how am i gonna manage?! :Q

<< If the shoes don't work, at the very least you'll have nice calves after awhile >>

thx!

ok im feeling as if im cluttering the thread now but reading the linked one and seeing all these +6 foot ppl that cant dunk cuz they cant palm the ball is just like WHOA!!! i mean i had the hoops in my backyard fixed so that i could dunk easily and i could always dunk a man's bball from like ages 14+ and i have normal-small hands... i cant really palm a ball but i never do when dunking... i mean fine it looks cooler but a dunk is a dunk, palming or not!!

I'm 6'5" and I can dunk, but it's close sometimes. You have to remember that when I hold my hand up it's slightly over 8'. That means I only have to jump 2'.

don't forget ur feet. when u jump to dunk... subtract the length of the distance between ur tip toes and ankle.

When they calculate your verticle leap, they don't take your feet into consideration.

sometimes though people forget to understand that the majority of those who can dunk are simply born with an unsually above average ability to jump, so it's in the genes. That, and to a lesser extent, a lanky frame with longer than average arms. At the pro level their arms typically hang down to their lower thighs even. And the difference between a MLB vs. a career AAA baseball hitter is a better than average ability of depth perception (you have to be born with it)

I'm about the same height 5'11" and i can slap the bottom of the rim. The fastest way to increase your vertical is doing box jumps.
Get a box about 2 foot high and do stationary jumps or pick something about the same height and jump over it. After awhile, you will notice
an increase in your vertical. Calf raises are also a good thing to do.

i'm only 5'7 and i used to be able to touch the rim on a 10' basket. you just gotta work hard at it.

<---hasn't worked those muscles for that purpose for a couple years now...
