Duron or Athlon or 1GHZ P3?

I need some help. I know that a 1.2 Ghz Athlon will be very fast but my $5.50/Hour job can't handle that plus the rest of the system very easily. Will someone with a 800+ Duron tell me if they are happy with it. I will be getting a AV7133 with 256MB PC 150 RAM so i can overclock, a Santa Cruz for the sound and i will be reusing my Geforce2 GTS from my P3 450 system.

I have a VA6 which can handle a 1GHZ P3. I would only need a processor to get this running.
I have no idea what i should do and i want the most i can get for my money since it is scarce.

I still think that the T-bird AXIA is the best investment. The Duron core is maxed out approx. 1.1Ghz i think.. The T-birds will go upto approx. 1.5- 1.6Ghz. Im a fan of P3s but there's no chance that the P3s will ever go that high with the steppings they have out for right now. P3 Tualatin will be out but i donno exactly when cauze I didn't check it. So yeah.. if you are going to overclock the hell out of it and at good price, T-bird would be the best choice.

If you want to overclock ur system the Athlon T-bird would be the best choice. Like MilkPowderR said Duron wont go any far then 1.1 Ghz. But since its time of changing, many things coming out, you might wait a little bit. The Athlon4 is coming out, P3 Tualatin, other mobos, so things might get a little bit cheaper, like the Asus A7V133, Athlon T-bird, Duron. So if time is not a matter for you, you might wait a little bit.

The Duron was brought out to compete with the Intel Celeron, a Celeron is not a Pentium. Look at it this way a Pentium and T-BIrd are like Lexus, Durons and Celerons are like Toyotas

I think the question here is simple really. You're working your ass off for your money, and you really want the best CPU you can get.

Well, the Athlon is better than a Duron, but it costs a bit more.

Here's my idea:

1. You can pick up a Duron now, OC it as far as it goes. This will give you a year of pleasure from a good computer.

2. Make sure you buy a good Mobo, and then change the CPU when you run into problems (=run out of CPU cycles).

Remember that it's possible to upgrade later as long as you get the right parts.

And the best thing? You can actually afford it!

Good luck

Another option is to get a Celeron 633 or 667 and overclock to a gig. This would probably be the cheapest option as you already have the board for it, and a Gigahertz Celeron running at 100 MHz+ FSB isn't a slow chip.

I am going to go ahead and buy the Ram and sound card now and wait a little longer for the T-Bird/Duon and Mobo. The Athlon 4 should drive prices down nicly. =-)

Actually, i get paid every 2 weeks. I can use the RAM and sound card now and i just found somebody that will sell me a used Santa Cruz cheap so it is not going to cost $78. Either way, I do not have enough money to buy all the parts now and not be flat broke for 2 weeks. I would have like $3 left if i bought all the parts now. Any speed increase will be welcome =-)

I already have a Gladiac GTS so the Vidercard won't matter.

If you are on a tight budget I recommend a Duron 750MHz, which you can get for about $30 (check pricewatch.com) and will probably be able to overclock close to 1GHz. For the motherboard get an Abit KT7E ($90), which overclocks just like the more expensive KT7A ($130) and has a FSB of 266MHz. I highly recommend you get the best ram out there. Try the PC-166 Tonicom from Neutron (I love it). It will last you for your next couple of systems.

you all are crazy... I got a $30 Duron kicking the living chit out of $230 PIIIs!! Now how do you like those apples?

I get better Memory Benchies and I am about tied with the fastest PIIIs @ 1200mhz with a duron @ 1078!!

All that for $30!! I have a T-bird 1.33 sitting pn my desk because this Duron would kick the chit out of it too if it could get some mhz behind it!!

Duron is the best bang for the buck... Duron is kicking PIIIs, Athlons, and Celerons all over the place... I got benchies to prove it!!

I have a TBird that i'm very happy with. However, if money is tight, i suggest a duron. THey are overclockable and are dirt cheap.
