Duron Overclocking Troubles.. seeking advice...

I have been trying to overclock my Duron 700 using the abit kt7 mb. I have Unlocked it using the pencil trick, and have been messing with it for a few days. So far the Cpu will reliably do 850 (8.5*100) at 1.65 volts. It is very stable in both windows and games, and runs at a fairly cool 39 degrees C. It will post and boot at both 900 and 950 but it crashes every time windows load (right around the login prompt). I have tried everything i can imagine to make it run at that speed but i have been unsucessful. I have gotten it to run at 875 (8.5*103) at around 1.7 volts but anything higher than that will make it crash. I have gotten the chip to run at 900mhz (9*100)in linux once, but i havent attempted since. The chip is so close to running at 900 or even 950 mhz. I would apreciate any advice on this.

did you try running it @ 1.8v?
maybe you reached the max of the cpu
how about trying to lower the CAS to 3 and some of the settings in the bios
maybe the penciling isn't as good
could be many things...
if you run 8.5X105 or 106 it will hit 900
i got a 650 to run @ 900 (9.0x100)with 1.8v @40C idle 45C max but it was already unlocked

sorry...nothing else i could think of right now...
what kind of ram are you using?11

My 700 Mhz Duron came with the L1 Bridges intact and to overclock to 997Mhz (9.5x105) @ 1.85v. Did you raise your voltage at 900 or 950 as far as it would go. Did you check the temps at the different speed/voltage? What are you using as a Heatsink/Fan? I could only to 900 Mhz with a Golden Orb, but replaced it with a Chrome Orb and upped the speed to 997Mhz. Since replaced the HSF with a Globalwin FOP32-1 which didn't do much better than the Chrome Orb. Ordered and Received a Alpha PEP66U and forgot to plug in the fan and "phhhht" my duron is gone. Waiting on another from Overclockerz.com that has been unlocked, but I'm not sure by what method (Pencil, Conductive Pen, Defroster repair Kit or Factory closed switches). I'm hoping for the later. Good Luck!

I have gone up to the max of 1.85v and 900 (900*100) is still no go. I cannot get the chip to do 900 using (8.5*106), 875(8.5*103) is the max i have been able to achieve. I am using the "AMD aproved" heatsink mwave was selling but i upgraded the fan to a much better one. I am also using fairly standard heatsink compound.

morgana007: what kind of powersupply do you have???

I am having the exact problem. looks like my duron 700 hits a brick wall at around 900mhz. it is a week 41. I have used 1.85V and am using a FOP32 h/s already. I am suspecting the power supply since i am only using a generic 250W.

I have a 300watt AMD aproved power supply. I doubt that this is the reason i am having overclocking trouble.

sounds like you might be hitting the overclock limit of your chip.
my duron runs 950(9.5x100) at 1.7 volts. It wont for the life of it hit 1ghz reliably. It will post and boot windows but is not stable.

Yeah, you've hit the limit. My Duron 600 will only hit 876, but isn't completely stable running Prime 95. It seems to run at 850 ok, but fails Prime 95 torture test with the voltage maxed out to 1.85 volts. I run it at 800 MHz at 1.675 volts and it runs rock solid stable. It's good enough for me until I get a 1.2 GHz TBird.

Try dropping the I/O (is that right?) voltage to 3.2V. It seems to have helped my stability quite a bit on my KT7-RAID.

Read what Losty wrote, especially the part about lowering the CAS to 3, could very well be it.

If you want to run the FSB higher try jumping the i/o voltage to 3.4
it might help with stability but i wouldn't go past 3.5
hope it helps...

Do you know what week your CPU is and also what kind of temps are you getting?

If you have an earlier week CPU (like something in the early 20s), then you may well have reached your limit. Also, if your temps are above 50C, then cooling is probably the culprit. Either that, or whe combination of not enough voltage/not enough cooling for higher voltage.
