Dutch beer for almost free...

2 crates (24 0.3 liter bottles per crate) of Grolsch Pilsner beer for 14.58 euro's (about $13) at Maxis!!!
or how about,
2 crates of Amstel beer for 12.50 euros (about $11) at Albert Heijn this week!
here in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

OK, so this will not be good for almost everyone reading this, but I thought it might be interesting to many of you how big a difference in prices there are. I think a 6 pack of Grolsch went for around $6-7 in L.A., but here it's about that price for a crate (24). But then again, Xbox is being released here in the 14th of March for a low price of 479 euro's (about $430)! What a bargain! And a monitor I'm buying (LG 915FT Plus) can be had for $300 to $340 online in the US, is 490 - 580 euro's here ($440 - $520).
One thing that is nice here is that almost every price is quoted with Tax (19%).

GetInMyFatBelly - Does the Grolsch beer there have the wire cap on the bottle. These are great if you like to brew your own beer.

Grolsch is one of the world's great lagers, my second favorite after Pilsner Urquell.
I've tried brewing using the wire Grolsch bottles and it doesn't work very well. About every third beer is flat, since the little rubber gaskets become funky. However you can buy replacement gaskets at some home brew places. It is certainly easier than using a bottle capper.
BTW, every so often 12 packs of Grolsch (355 ml, no wire tops) goes on sale at Albertson's for $10 plus CRV and tax, about $10.80 after tax. OK, that's still 40% more than in Holland, but not too shabby.
I haven't been to Europe in 20 years, but I remember grog was much cheaper and a lot better (that was before "craft" beers were widely available in the U.S.). Food was also a little cheaper, strangely enough, maybe because the EC paid farmers subsidies to grow crops while the U.S. government pays farmers to not grow food.

Note: If you look on the can, it says it is a "Premium" beer, so what else can you ask for? I can get it for $7.29 a case on occassion and I love it.

Just an FYI,
Amstel and Amstel Light are two different animals. Amstel Light is the pussified American market light beer with something like 2.0 percent alcohol. Amstel is a more Heineken like 5.0 percent. And it tastes like beer, not Coors light (as the Amstel light does).
