just to help out a bit on the matter...

SACD requires a SACD capable player, most of the newer mid priced DVD players will play them...

DVD-A... many of the discs are multi format so you can play on a regular dvd player in either 5.1 or DTS, but to get the full benefit out of it you need a DVD player that is DVD Audio capable.. AND THEN on top of that.. you need a receiver/processor that has a 6 channel input not just the basic optical or coaxial cable...

Some players are dual format and will play both SACD and DVD-A, usually the higher end players... Denon, Sony, Pioneer & a few others.. my mind has gone blank as to all of them...

But if you are a true audio or videophile you will want to research a lot of the players... some may have dual capability (there is a pioneer that comes to mind that is $180, I almost bought it) but some may be lacking in the proceesing departmet... it may have good audio processing... but the video processing isn't that great.. or vice-versa

I am currently looking at the pioneer elite line which i think starts on e-bay for about 4-500 bucks... the denons are about 600 for the basic line player & then the there are the higher end line which are all at about a grand... rememebr.. you get what you pay for.... so if you just have the basic sound setup, to get the lower model pioneer is great... but if you are an audiophile... ya might want to save he money and get something a bit higher

I hope that might help describe what you need to get the most out of your SACD & your DVD-A

for those wondering about dual-format players, they'll range anywhere from your cheap entry level Pioneer 563, to your Pioneer Elite 45A, Denon 1600 (old), 2200, 2900, 5900 and Yamaha 2300MKII. I would suggest the Denon 2900, but if you can't afford that, the 2200...Burr-Brown DACs and SiliconImage 504 chips.

The Pioneer DV-563A is probably the cheapest reasonable quality one that plays both, and has a mostly chroma free progressive scan DVD video output. It's not too shabby for about $150 or so.

I have a yamaha c920 player. DVD-A.

It might be nice to have a dual format player, but this is not too expensive, is a changer (a must for a lazy bum like me) and has a Faroudja vid chip.

I have to spend money elsewhere, but even so, I think I would wait for HD-DVD before upgrading again.

2.8MHz. Also, per sample, there's only 1 bit of information, whereas DVD-A can currently carry 24-bits per sample and sample 192000 times a second.

1 bit per sample? how does that work? how can that produce a waveform?

I think it's called delta modulation... basically 1 means go up one unit of amplitude, 0 means go down one unit of amplitude... it only works well with a very high sample rate.

i stand corrected. but that's still over 29x the sampling rate of DVD-Audio.

the 1 bit thing is because SACD uses DSD instead of PCM sampling. whole different ballpark.
