Hello,
I just put together my new system today, and everything was working fine and dandy(including the DVD player playing DVD's) , except when i installed the 4 in 1 drivers, suddenly my DVD player stopped playing DVD's(needed to install them to get into UDMA mode)...
I was wondering if anybody could maybe help me figure out what is going on..One strange thing I noticed is my DVD player is being referred to as a SCSI drive in hardware profile, eventhough it isn't a SCSI drive, and that is the only option that comes up when i search for a device...Also, if I leave the drive hooked up like this, it becomes VERY hot, and also freezes my system when I try and boot it up sometimes.
Here are the important specs of the system..
Running Windows 2000 Pro
MSI K7T PRO 2-A Motherboard
AMD Thunderbird 1ghz processor
Sony DDU220E 4x(i think) DVD drive
4.28 VIA 4 in 1 drivers.
Any help would be greatly appeciated...
Thanks

Some VIA chipsets don't get along with the DMA functions on IDE devices.
I have a Hewlett Packard CD Writer, back with my MVP3 board, when I enabled DMA it just won't write, keeps coming up with errors, I solved this when I got a KT133 board.

Maybe your older generation DVD doesn't get along with the KT133 when DMA is enabled.

I would also definately get rid of it being classed as a SCSI drive, not sure if this is a reason that it is getting hot but maybe. Add it in the Add new hardware bit in control panel and specify all the settings yourself there.

Also, try slightly older 4 in 1 drivers if all else fails.

Given, those drivers have to go on the hdd right after you install windows for you to have them work properly. I know this isn't the same mobo, but you can check for similar issues and answers: mobo probs solved.

What kind of sound card are you using? If it's SB Live! it could be your problem. I´ve been having troubles with SB Live! + DVD + VIA chipsets.

I'm having a similar problem, however my DVD player IS SCSI. Everything detects fine and my other devices all show up as IDE, which is correct. My problem, however, is i can't watch DVD's, they start then no menu comes up. I figured I'd just install 2000, seeing as how my 98 is fubared anyway, but maybe that won't fix it?

I was wondering myself why Windows 98 identifies my internal Zip drive and DVD drives as SCSI, so I did some research on the net. Here's what I found:

Most DVD and CDROM drives, as well as internal IDE Zip drives, are in fact ATAPI drives rather than true EIDE drives. ATAPI drives use SCSI commands over the IDE interface. They therefore are identified in the operating system as SCSI drives.
