DVD problem

ok i dont watch dvd's on my computer very much but when i do my system allways freezes after about 10 min or so and theres a high pitch beeping sound. ive ruled out overheating cuz as soon as i reboot the computer i check the temp in the bios and its only at 47c. and besides i can do anything else and its just fine. infact the only times ive ever had to reboot are because of this dvd issue. my system specs are: 1.2ghz tbird @ 1.4ghz (140x10.0), iwill ka266, 512mb ram (1 crucial 256mb pc2100, 2 kingston 128mb pc2100), visiontek geforce 3 @ 215/505 det 12.90, soundblaster live x-gamer 5.1, linksys etherfast nic, toshiba 16x dvd, lite-on 12x10x32 burner. i think thats it. if anyone knows why this is happening or has experienced this please help me out.

I've got pretty much the same basic specs, but my dvd's pioneer. The only thing I can think of is either the DVD, or the fact that you're overclocking (and I seriously doubt that's the problem)...

What DVD player are you using?

Sounds like you might have a demo version of WinDVD installed... it times out after 10 minutes and locks up the player.

boy i wish it was that simple...im using powerdvd. i bought it from the cyberlink web page. i have version 3.0. the thing that really gets me is that sometimes the system will freeze after 2 or 3 minutes, other times i can watch a movie for about 30 - 45 minutes. but, eventually it will freeze every time. i have no clue as to why its doing this?

well i switched to windvd and everything seems to be working just fine. i still dont have any idea why powerdvd didnt work but, oh well, im just pissed i spent money to download that program.

I've had mixed results with watching DVDs on computers. Mixed enough to where I'm highly considering buying a PS2 soon and using that for my main DVD player. PowerDVD has given me pretty reliable usage of my DVD drive, whereas the copy of WinDVD that came with my DVD drive plays movies okay but the video 'jitters' like crazy. This doesn't happen in WinDVD. Each DVD decoder program seems to decode the movie differently, some may not be able to decode a movie properly and may crash, where another program may run fine.

Sometimes the DVD movie is at fault. Most DVD movies I play work fine, I've only had one movie that just refused to work. 'The Cell', by the way. I don't know if it was a defective movie, but that thing would crash at random times playing through. It crashed at least 5 times at different points throughout the movie, no matter if I tried using PowerDVD, PC Friendly DVD (included on the DVD disk), or the jittery WinDVD. I've read people say they've had similar problems with this movie. Like I said, sometimes it's the movie, and if that's the case there's not a whole lot you can do about it.
