DVD -> Receiver Connection. Optical ? Digital ?

Hi Friends,

I had a question regarding the optical/digital out/in found on dvd players / receivers.

I have a dvd player that has dts/dd blah blah decoder.
I have a receiver that can do dts/dd blah blah decoding too.

I would like to know

1. If I choose to connect them via optical/digital out/in, does the dts/dd processing happen twice ? Or is optical / digital out raw data that is read from the dvd and passed on straight via the optical/digital out ?

2. Any experiences with optical / digital out ? Which is better ?

A digital out can be either optical or coaxial. If you use the optical out on the DVD player, the receiver will do the decoding.

just make sure that your DVD player is set to NOT decode the 5.1 or Dobly signals. As for between optical and coaxial, there's no difference that you'll notice.

Dobly...heh...not ragging...but I think I'll have to watch Spinal Tap tonight

I've heard coax is a little better because if the optical gets a little bit of dirt or dust on it... Other than that they're pretty much equal.

But yes, make sure that when you set up your DVD player that you have it set to NOT process the signal. Let your receiver do that.
