dvd ripping software

handbrake, avinet, freez, dvdripping plat, magic, imtoo, and none have worked.


ive switched out dvds too.

wtf?!1

can someone recommend me a dvd ripper so i can tranfer the video to an editing program!!!

what exactly are you trying to do? If you just want to rip it, AnyDVD with DVDDecrypter or DVDFabDecrypter are two excellent choices.

those aren't ripping programs, those are transcoding programs. ripping is removing the files from a disc and decoding them/removing the copy protection.
you need dvdfab or slysoft anydvd. after that any program that can handle dvd video files can work in the decoded files

option 1. dvdfab, google it. they have free and pay options. pay version can encode to different format.
anydvd, also pay option.
dvd copy protection is still evolving. the studios continue to spew out different schemes to throw off dvd rippers so you need to keep the ripper up to date. these two companies are the only ones that do such. after decyrpting/ripping with such software you are left with standard dvd files. and a video editing program that can handle dvd files will work. most video editing software doesn't build ripping in because technically its not legal. dcma says you are a criminal for doing it.

you get muddy answers because your question is so vague and you don't tell us what you intend to do.

Rip it using any of the tools mentioned above but don't transcode it. (to AVI/MP4/MKV, using DivX/XviD/H.264 etc.)
It's easier for the CPU to work with the vob files and you will maintain all the quality so your final render (after editing) doesn't suffer.

So you have two threads here about ripping and encoding movies, if you don't mind me asking so we can help you out a bit better what exactly are you trying to do with the DVD and what do you want as an end result?

Ripping can mean various things imgburn can rip to an .iso, AnyDVD can rip to .vob. If you want to reduce the size and change the output to .avi or .mpeg you'll need to encode the movie too. Some useful tools for this are handbrake, DVDFab, and Fairuse Wizard.

AnyDVD now uses the CloneDVD2 ripping engine, but Slysoft still recommends CloneDVD2 for this task.

has Free Lifetime Upgrades to any new version. They are going to Version 5 on May 3, 2008
They also are always updating the program to account for new copy protection schemes.
And, yes, I do own a copy and it works excellent.

Easy. If your on PC, buy AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. Totally worth the money. Every cent. Pair these programs with Roxio Easy Media Creator. Done.

If your on the Mac, you can use MacTheRipper, and Roxio Toast.

im on vista btw.


ive tried tons of "free" programs but all of them only let you copy part of the program. i already have a decent encoding software, i just need a program to rip the actual dvd (and whatever format it's in).


help!?

What do you mean by rip the DVD? Do you want to keep it as is, or do you want to put it in one nice playable file? Or do you want to change things like sounds and video patterns?

If you just want to rip the dvd, then DVD Decrypter is my decrypter of choice, DVD Fab Decrypter is very nice as well.

If you want to transcode the DVD, then you need to first rip it, then use a transcoding program, I like Megui for that.

If you want to get the Audio only, then you need to Demux the DVD file, Megui has a tool for that (D2V creator).

If you use DVD decrypter make sure you are in IFO mode so you can select the correct video. DVDs usually contain many videos and a weird encoding scheme that spreads them through the VOB files. By using an IFO mode you can select the individual videos you want to use (DVD Decrypter displays video length for you, so it isn't purely guess and check).

A good resource for DVD Ripping is Doom9.org, browse the forums there and youll probably find what you are looking for.

magic dvd ripper did everything i wanted. it ripped the dvd directly to avi format allowing me to slice whatever parts i want with all compatible editing software.

no encoders or anything!

you sure? dvdfab always works as far as i know. what kind of weird nonstandard dvd are you ripping. fab does a total rip of anything out there as far as i know

, Maybe I shouldn't say this, but, hate to burst your bubble. If it is changing a vob container to an AVI container Most likely it is using an encoder and changing formats on you (IE Quality lost). It just does it in the background. However, if it does everything you want it to then great, glad you found what you are look for!

yea there is no vob to avi without encoding involved. if its doing it so quick that he doesn't think its encoding,it must be a rather quick and dirty job. either way quality lost as said, dvd doesn't have much to lose in the first place!

I use DVD Shrink to pull it off the DVD into an ISO.
You dont HAVE to reduce it in size either. You can keep large movies at their native 8.5GB if you want.
If you decide to reduce then it automatically resamples the movie to a lower quality for you.
Its slow and I dont know how it does it and the results are usually far from perfect.

Well, not quite, AVI does support MPEG2 streams if I remember correctly, (But not AC3 streams) so it would be able use the raw MPEG2 stream and have to quality loss. However, my bet is it uses a fast encoder like XVid or DivX and changes it on the fly.
