dvd rom problem

I have a asus E 616 DVD rom. Now the prob is that it runs cds but it cannot even read a dvd.the light just flashes repeatedly for about 2 mins n then it goes off. Left clicking the dvd drive the message comes that "pls insert a disk". Apart from changing the rom wat can i do to solve this problem?Thx in advance for any suggestions.

The addition of mulitple burn applications can foul up the burner. Check the burner in another PC. Perhaps the laser for the DVD is dead.

Thats an older player, basically you prob need to have a burner that allowed to bitset your DVD+_R discs to DVD-ROM while burning to make them readable in an older player
You could also try to set reader to PIO mode 4

And there is "newer" firmware

but read "description" instructions carefully before you flash.

thx bozo for ur suggestions. but i have no idea how to set the reader to PIO mode 4,as u have mentioned. Pls be a bit descriptive.Thx.
