DVDROM & Windows XP [ Need Help]

installed this in a friends computer which has XP installed in it. the dvdrom is recognized in device manager but when i go into my computer it thinks it is a cdrom . tried to play a dvd movie in it but it only sees the file as audio. i only use windows 2000 so dont know how to configure XP to recognize this DVDROM correctly.
her machine is also a DELL if that makes any changes . Originally it had a cdrom installed

As far as Windows is concerned that is just another CD-ROM drive. You have to install some software to play DVD movies like PowerDVD or WinDVD. It you didn't get one with the drive (usually only comes with retail packaged drives), it is easy to find copies around the web for under $10. Look for places to buy on pricewatch.com .

You shouldn't need to configure anything with XP it should have just PnP and been race ready. Mine shows up as a CD half the time in my computer too, depending on what I have in the drive it seems. I would start by going into the device mangler and right clicking on the drive and choosing "scan for hardware changes". If needed, I'd also make sure you have the latest chipset drivers, and that the drive has the latest firmware. Also, what DVD software player are you using, did it come with the drive?

DVDROM



the software in the machine is powerdvd which is dell software.


dvdshrink doesnt recognize it

dvd decryptor sees it fine


suggestions?

Try another software DVD player would be my next move. If you need a copy of PowerDVD I can ship you one at no cost I have a bunch of them leftover from builds. EDIT: I'd check for a firmware update.

even with a data dvd it see's it only as a audio file


dumb xp or does it need drivers for this dvdrom ?

took the dvdrom back out , either i need drivers or the dvdrom has a problem working

Can I install the DVD-ROM that comes with the 20th Aniv unit in another machine? Will I require special drivers?

I only ask because Im trying to install it in a Dell machine, with PowerDVD, and its not recognizing the media when I insert a movie.

I know you dont support other machines, I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on this.

Is the DVD-ROM special only to a Shuttle pc?

Here's a copy of what I sent to Shuttle. Lets see what they say !??!!?

Have you had a chance to try the unit in another machine? That would eliminate the posibility of your friends pc if the drive does not work else where.
