dx10 or dx11?

Hey guys! I was just wondering whether its sensible to buy a dx10 card now or wait for the dx11 cards to be released.

I can barely run anything on my 6600 agp. So my question is that, if I buy a dx10 card right now for e.g. gtx 260 c216 / hd 4870 then will it run everything on full high settings for the next 3-4 years. I intend to run everything at 1440x900 or 1680x1050 max.

welcome to the forum optimus. I think your requirement of getting a card that can run everything on high setting for 3-4 years is probably too optimistic. realistically 2 years would be more inline then you have to update again.

if you need something now to run certain games of your choice, gtx 260 c216 / hd 4870 both will do nicely for your needs. but if you can wait the new dx11 should be quite a bit better than current generation cards. It also has a completely new design since dx11 requires a very different approach. this probably means cards that can run dx10 games well will be obsolete or very slow in the up coming dx11 games. so for longevity concerns, you better off wait for the new generation cards to come (end of year).

Why wait when you can build for cheap now?

The DX11 cards arent going to be some magical GPUs.

is some catastrophe of cost-benefit ratio looming on the horizon? there is nothing wrong with waiting. if you're interested in GPGPU, Dx11 cards are indeed magic.

I agree with you OCguy. I have been waiting almost an year for upgrading to core 2 quad.

@ nyker96 - uhhhhh... well sorry for the confusion. I should had written decent graphics instead. My 6600 can't even run L4D on medium graphics. So my question was that if I get a Dx 10 card now then would it run games released 3 years from now at least on decent graphics and resolutions? Maybe 1680x1050.

I would upgrade now and then wait 1-1.5 years for the second generation DX 11 cards and then get one of them. That way you will get a card with all the dx 11 bugs worked out and have let enough time to pass for drivers to mature and DX 11 games to be released. Parts are so cheap now theres no point in waiting and then you have the use of a new computer for a year, just put something cheap like a 4830/4770 in it for now as they will both murder your current card my .02.

Honestly, I would think even a 4670 would run circles around your current card, especially at those resolutions. There are a lot of good cheap cards out there right now, I'd say upgrade now and just wait and see what comes out over the next two years. Go with something no more expensive than a 4850 and it'll be pretty easy to not regret just waiting and buying another card after a year or two.

But also, yeah, you're basically going to be rebuilding your system to upgrade off AGP probably.

again, you're being too optimistic. The Geforce 6 series came out in 2004-2005. Three years is a long time in the computer industry, and unless you're dolling out for a high end 4870X2 or GTX295 I doubt your rig will last 3 years and get "decent" graphics.

On the other hand, mt old Radeon 9600XT is still kicking it in my backup rig, so go figure...

1st generation dx cards never run that version of dx decently anyway (especially 2-3 years later). I'd get something decent for dx10 now and wait for 2nd generation dx11

An option you might want to consider is an HD4770/HD4830 now, for ~$80~$90, keep that for maybe 1~2 years, and then buy another card in a couple of years with the $80~$100 you saved by buying cheaper now. Or get a Crossfire motherboard to give you the option of upgrading to dual cards at some point in the future.

Arguably Crossfire HD4830 will be better performance in many titles than an HD4870, especially when you aren't going to be hugely memory bound due to not running something like 2560x1600.
You would also then have the option of seeing what DX11 cards bring to the table. You get to upgrade now and notice a dramatic increase in performance with a cheap future upgrade path (Crossfire) or the option to switch to DX11 if it proves to be much better.

Hi all Not to make any gamers mad I are one, but DX10 on my vista 64 ultimate gets along with some of my games some of the time why anyone would go out of the way in the form of cash for DX11 is kinda beyond me, maybe DX11 is great because Microsoft says so ? Hummm wait isnt that what they said about DX10.

Crysis DX10 64 bit mode crashes to windowed mode, same for 32 bit dx10, dx9 runs great and looks great doesnt crash. That is just one example but they havent really fixed it, and now tadaa time for dx11 get that wallet out, is it that dx11 crashes faster, or takes longer to crash. Beats me I'll wait and see how the victems scream before I go after it.


Optimus the core 216, 260GTX is a good choice in my book for performance ect ect, the 4870 is also a bute I'd make my choice based on my motherboard and what it supports SLI then its the 260, Crossfire then 4870 if it doesnt matter then price I think thats the 4870.

DX11 cards won't be released for a long time, might as well get ur self a card now, don't expect it to run high for 3~4 years though as it can't even run high on some of todays games

optimus290, what else is in your current system? Do you have a pcie slot (you list an agp graphics card)? If you have to do a full upgrade then what else are you looking at getting and what is your budget? There are some very good, inexpensive dx 10 cards out now, dx 11 should be out for the release of windows 7 (somewhere between august and november is my current guess), but as with other generations its likely the first cards will be expensive and not that good for dx11 (though they should be a lot faster with dx10 then current cards).

If you answer some of those questions it might be easier for someone to make a recommendation, but in general it comes down to what you want to do with it and what you can afford.

I was just a bit confused about the radeon cards performance in Physx supported games. I have seen ATI cards do very well in all games, but they take a big hit when it comes to Mirror's edge.

So I am a bit curious about the gpu selection as many companies are supporting Physx now.
