Dying for a new huge monitor

I just can't seem to stay away from my 30 in Dell. I always have kept one on my desk while trying out other screens. My latest venture which was a 34" ultra wide, while a fantastic screen, ultimately ended up getting sold in favor of my 30. I managed to stay with the ultrawide for 2 years but am completely in love with being back to the 30 full time. It's gotta be the vertical height... It really just fills up your face with screen. The ultrawide was jaw dropping to look at but was just missing sheer size.

I can't really figure out what to get. I really would like to get something like 32 or 40 4K but I'm in the dark as far as the best choices out there for my needs.

I'm a avid gamer but don't require the absolute fastest response time or zero input lag screens. I just want a huge screen that has respectable gaming performance and stunning visuals.

Can anybody help?

The 40" and 43" panels by Wasabi Mango or Crossover aren't to pricey (I think around $500-700), are IPS, and have Freesync and HDMI 2.0. I think they are available in Newegg. If you are okay with going with a non-mainstream brand that is.

Wait for dp1.3/1.4 monitors. There's nothing really interesting in this market atm. I'm looking to upgrade my monitor as well, but I've come to the conclusion that current generation simply does not have enough features to warrant an upgrade.

HP should have a 32" 1440p 75hz freesync monitor Omen 32 comming out this August.

Like you, I have the Dell 30" and agree with Biostud. I would love a much bigger screen but am also waiting for a DP 1.3 or DP 1.4 before I make my next big investment. I prefer the 16:9 ratio as I use my computer for both work and gaming. My issue is finding a 16:9 with a higher refresh along with the DP 1.3 or 1.4 along with a larger monitor - e.g. 40". It seems like in 2007 they came out with the Dell 30" and the upgrades for the last 8 years or so have been so minimal that it is hard to justify a replacement unless you bought a Wasabi but you still don't get the refresh rate or the DP to push the refresh rate at higher resolutions.

I just got this Crossover 324K at work and it's absolutely stunning. It's 32" 4K, ignore the 28" typo in the Newegg description. Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about gaming on it, since it's at work and hooked up to a GF 750Ti. I run Windows 10 at 125% scaling on it. If you have any other questions about it I'd be happy to answer them.

Overclock.net forum is a good place to do research on Korean monitors. Any monitor of significance has owners threads there sharing first hand experience. If you want a premium product, the BenQ BL3201PT 32" is probably the top monitor in its size/class.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/benq-bl3201pt-32-inch-4k-ultra-hd-monitor,review-33147.html

Larger, you may have to go Korean (Wasabi, Crossover, etc) or Philips (40"). Adamk47 has the latter and I believe posted a thread here about it.

lavaheadache, I agree with amenx about AdamK47's recommendation. I must say Adam knows his stuff and seems to pick pricey BUT excellent components. I listened to him on my BenQ BL3200PT and eventhough I later bought a Dell U3415W ultrawide because "I had to have it - you know how that goes".

I still have and LOVE that 32" 2560x1440 BenQ.

At this stage I think Adam has a 40" Phillips 4k monitor for that WOW factor. Pricey but WOW.

It's a pretty good monitor. I have the BL3200PT hooked to a kvm and I run 3 pc's from it. It's been good to me.

I was kinda in the same boat as you - I originally bought a 34" LG 34UM95 to replace my PL setup (20" 16x12 2007FP + 30" 25x16 U3011) but I missed the vertical space (mostly physically) so much that I just relegated it to office duty and kept on using my PL setup for everything else. I'm weird. For office purposes (mostly coding) the ultrawide works very well, though.

Recently I had a hankering to give 4k a whirl, so I bought a Dell UP3216Q that will replace part of the PL setup if I like it enough. I'm not as avid a gamer as I used to be; I value colour/picture and build quality more now. If you're interested I can take a few comparison pics and share my thoughts on the switch.

If all goes well I'll end up using the U3011 as a secondary alongside the UP3216Q and retire the 2007FP.

I won't be upgrading monitors until I can get all of the following:
* High refresh rate
* HDR capability
* 1440 or higher resolution
* Adaptive Sync with lower boundary no higher than 30hz
* Ultrawide preferred but not necessary
* Extremely low backlight bleed
* Low ghosting
* Not CRT

This seems (finally) imminently possible with the first desktop OLEDs coming out. I'll have to wait for them to drop to a reasonable price, but seeing how 4k TV's are already hitting $600 price points for midrange sets I can't imagine it will be too long. Next 3 years probably.

You do any gaming? Curious how the 32" 4K would look at non native resolution.

I do, but not much any more as mentioned. Last two games I played were FO4 and GTA5, but I only got through about 30% of FO4 before getting bored. My 290 (now 390) had no issues with either of those at 25x16.

Anything you want me to try/do?

Give your subjective opinion of how noticeable a change in game resolution from 4K to 2560x1440 is... I guess that's what I'm looking for in a nutshell. On my 40" it's very noticeable.

I have the same 40" Phillips monitor. Black levels are great due to being PVA. Input lag is acceptable (I don't notice any). The only thing I don't care for is the banding. It's most noticeable on a white screen but doesn't bug me while gaming.

Another plus, because of the size and PVA screen, you can add a custom widescreen resolution if you like the wide FOV. The deep blacks make the bars at top and bottom much less noticeable.

I've like to try a 40" Wasabi to compare since the Freesync feature is really nice.

OP, I've had the 34" LG and 30" Dell. Going 4k 40" was a definite step up from the 30".

I have to admit the latest monitors are either too puny, have to low of a resolution and or low refresh rate. I'm just waiting for someone to come out with a 40", 144hz, 4K or at least 1440p only to get me tempted and then crush my hopes by say it has a 50 ms lag. I'm sure most people here will think I'm too picky but I'd be happy with a 16:9 32" 3840x2160, 120hz with 8ms lag. or a 35", 1440p, 120hz with a 8ms lag. But so many of the latest monitors are like 25" (WTF?) with a 1080p res and 75hz - sure they are cheap but I'd rather get a really good monitor to last me for years. Yes, I realize $300 for a POS monitor is a low price but I'd rather pay $1500 and just be stunned by a great, great big monitor.

not sure if I want to get the up3216Q or a larger 40" 4k screen. I would love to get the Dell but back when I got a UP2414Q (24" 4k), the Windows scaling support was awful. A 32" 4k might only truly be comfortable with scaling. I really don't want to get an off brand monitor because I am very prone to buyers remorse when I "settle" for something.

I'm waiting for dp 1.3, I just don't see any point in half-assing an upgrade at the moment. If you can hang on for a bit I think it'll be totally worthwhile.

The only thing that seems to be able to check all of the boxes for quality and performance is OLED, and its slow in coming. IPS has glow, okay but not great contrast and okay but not great response times / ghosting. TN has poor off angle viewing, poor color reproduction (generally), poor contrast. VA has poor ghosting, and its really expensive to get the high refresh rate versions, and sometimes you see more banding in VA. Everything has drawbacks today you can't pay your way out of if you want the best. Only OLED can hit all the checkboxes. The drawback of course being much higher price, and the possibility of having to replace it due to it wearing out (e.g. even more cost). But at least you can get everything provided you have the checkbook to back it.

The even bigger drawback of OLED being that it barely exists for desktop users...
