Dynamic Disk Unreadable

Hey folks,

Really need your help here...

I bought a new hdd, formatted it as a Dynamic Disk, and moved all my data from the C drive to it.
I reformatted my pc, and now I can't read my second hdd in the Disk Management console. I'm getting Disk is Unreadable error message.
I'm running WinXP Pro, which i was running before I reformatted too.

Is the data on the unreadable disk lost? If not, is there any way to recover the data? Possibly with a third party program or something?

Hope you guys can help.

Thanks,

when you formatted as dynamic disk, the OS that did the formatting "owned" the disk. when you reformatted your disk, you lost the original "owner". so it also wouldn't help if you moved that new HD to another computer, whether its running xp, doesn't matter, cant access it cuz it didn't format it.

kinda like when you are dual booting between 2000 and xp, both installed in different HD and both formatted as dynamic disks. the 2000 can only access the dynamic disk that it formatted and the xp os can only access the dynamic disk that it formatted. thats why you really shouldn't use dynamic disks when you are dual booting or multi booting anything.

there might be a 3rd party proggie, but i am not aware. sorry bro

This answer is just wrong. I'm not sure whats happening in the posters case, but it has nothing to do with 'ownership'. Ownership is a security feature and an admin can easily 'take ownership' of files on a drive if it's moved to a new system. I realize xfactordomine has a reall issue to solve, but misinformation like 'cant access it cuz it didn't format it' won't help.

The system should have seen the drive as a foreign disk and simply let him import the drive. If he's getting disk is unreadable, then something wrote to that drive or something else 'weird' happened (unless he changed controllers and the geometry isn't the same).

Write this down: Unless you have a specific need, Dynamic Disks are evil.

Due to a unresolved bug, they are actually faster right now

ugg..i think you're right. i distinctly read somewhere that you should never use dyanimic disks when dual booting xp pro and w2k. think that messed me up.

Check this... strangely, once I installed SP1, the Dynamic disk was readable again.

Weird...

Thanks for the help,
