dynamic disk?

I've read a couple articles on "Dynamic Disks" in windows 2000 and have seen that term thrown around a bit in places....but I'm still not too sure what a dynamic disk is and what advantages setting a hard drive as a dynmic disk present. Can someone help explain?

No real advantages to dynamic disk. Just a MS method of disk management to enable MS software RAID 0, 1, and 5. RAID1 might be useful if you don't want to get a PCI RAID card (which is also dependant on the system CPU). You can also just run it like your current drive in what is called simple mode. MS Software RAID0 and 5 are way to cumbersome to setup and maintain to be of any use. There is an isolated bug due to the way partition tables are written. Once you convert you cannot go back to basic disk without reformatting.

Advice, just stick with basic disk.

i'd definately would like to know how well this works too, anyone tried?
i was thinking of trying on my extra 2 30gb's, not my main system drive of course...
would there be any performance increase with large file access?

It has differant uses, raid being the biggest one. I run both a raid 5 setup and a mirror on a server at home. Mostly to play with, not because I am concerned with data loss. It seems to work well. Another nice thing is you can resize the partitions (all except where you have the OS installed) you have on the drive without having to reformat.
