The hose attachment is a bit lame and if you block the tool the machine will come visit you as the hose compresses.

Dyson's new DC14 upright, bagless vacuum cleaner, $570, is the latest in the British manufacturer's highly touted arsenal of colorful uprights. In recent tests it proved very good overall, but neither as good nor as low-priced as plenty of other vacuum cleaners we tested.

The DC14 Complete, available only at Sears, performed similarly to Dyson's DC07, an upright rated very good in our latest report on vacuum cleaners. It cleaned bare floors superbly and had good airflow, which is important in cleaning with tools. As with the DC07, however, it was middling on medium-pile carpet. The vacuum's floating head--intended to adjust automatically to carpet height--was a bit sticky on some test samples, so the brushes didn't always make complete contact with the carpet.

The DC14 has one major functional advantage over the DC07: The wand doesn't need to be detached, reversed, and reattached to be operated in its extended position. That makes it much quicker to set up for hard-to-reach places. The DC14 is also slightly shorter and lighter than the DC07, which may make it easier to carry.

Dyson makes several versions of the DC14, with different mixes of tools and features. The one we bought, the DC14 Complete, includes a mattress-cleaning tool and a soft dusting brush unavailable on other models. CR's quick take

We can point you toward less expensive upright models that worked better overall than the DC14. They include the Hoover WindTunnel Self Propelled Ultra U6439-900, $300; Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870, $140, a CR Best Buy; and Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 34922, $300. The Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900, $200, is also a very good performer.

never heard of cr losing a suit. well mostly i see them being sued and winning. remember sharper images ionic breeze? it got panned by consumer report and sharper image sued. they lost as they should have.

Just buy a $100 one and when it breaks buy another and so on and so on and you will always have that "new" vaccum cleaner suction available to you.

Vaccums, sadly, have become a disposible commodity. They are the plastic cups of the 21st century.

My parents bought it for us when we moved house, and it was something like £80 from eBay.

Compared to our older Hoover, it's amazing. When we got it, I ran the Hoover around the house, and then used the Dyson. Result? One 75% full canister.

My mother did the same thing when they bought theirs, same result.

So, I can categorically state, that in my experience, the Dyson was not expensive, and cleans a damned sight better than our older Hoover.

My wife goes through vacuums like she does purses and shoes. Okay, maybe that's exaggerating a bit, but she's bought a new vacuum at least once every year or so since we moved into our house in 1999. FWIW, she claims her Dyson is the best one she's ever used, short of her mom's Rainbow.

I'm not here to comment on vacuum cleaners but Consumer Reports itself. Sorry but I can't trust a company that rates Bose speakers higher than B&W speakers. Sometimes they're OK but their test methods have been questioned in the past. Bose speakers better than B&W speakers? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

sorry their testing methodology is explained and generally makes sense for most things and especially appliances for which they have much experience. speakers, i don't remember their review but bose probably got decent markts because of their ease of use. and well they are easy to use. as far as i can tell the audiophiles gripe about the bookshelf speaker test where the 100 dollar bose outranked the 550 dollar b&w not that bose got first place mind you. that is a big price difference you know, and i guess that could be under consideration, supposedly the b&w did come slightly ahead in terms of accuracy. bose hate is always amusing though, we are talking about the audio industry where audiophiles spend hundreds of dollars on "special" cables? crack open any audio magazine and see how much excessive money is spent on audio, it far outstrips any prices bose has to offer. even if their testing methodology is imperfect with speakers it doesn't mean its imperfect with everything else. have you even bothered evaluating their tests with other devices? they state how they do the tests right there you know. and frankly i've yet to see a car review magazine that goes off on a bose is evil rant when reviewing a car with bose sound system. so i guess that invalidates all car reviews.

I had the exact same experience when we bought our new vaccuum......EXCEPT WE BOUGHT A NEW EUREKA. By the time most people get around to replacing a vacuum, the old one is so worn out, ANYTHING new will suck up tons of missed dirt.

The g/f has a DC07 (bought as a refurb), we love it. Paid ~$250 for it, & had the same full canister from a freshly vacuumed carpet (using the old vacuum) experience that everyone else has.

It's not perfect, the hose/wand design is a little cumbersome & it's a heavy bitch but it does great on both carpet and linoleum (at least for what we use it for).

The $450 retail pricetag is a little hard to swallow but the refurb has been great for us.

Considering it was free (to me) and my parents only paid a low price for it, I couldn't be happier. It's the best vacuum cleaner I've seen and used, and a lot of people agree.

The DC-07 is £149.99 new here. That's about $240.
The DC-15 "Animal" is £276, roughly $441.

The Ball (DC15) does address some of the shortcomings of the earlier models, in terms of agitation and ease of use of the wand attachment. We just replaced our DC07 with a DC15. It's costly though. I still think the DC07 (refurb) is the sweet spot in terms of price/performance for this line.

We compared the DC07 to two brand new top of the line Hoovers (one self propelled, the other not), and a mid-line Dirt Devil. No comparison with our carpet, the DC07 pulled much more dirt in less time.

The suction is so high it has warnings to prevent injury and for good reason.

sorry you are just justifying your spending 2-3x times more for a "pretty" vaccum cleaner. consumer reports doesn't just pull reviews out of their asses, they test products in a rational/scientific manner. the dysons were rated as only average suction to begin with. of course dyson puts a warning on it, its marketing and obviously works considering their fat profits.

Do a Google search on Dyson reviews. Consumer Reports rated it "Very Good", and that was the worst of the reviews. They work very well, and they should last for a good many years since they are truely clog free.
