E2200 to replace PD 820

I just picked up an e2200 for less than 18$ that will be used in place of an old pentium D 820 that my kids are using. What kind of performance increase if any should I expect? I noticed they were having trouble playing TF2 I am hoping this will help some. Running 2 gigs ddr2 and a GT 440 with 1 gb of ddr3 on it. Overclocking is not going to be an option as the gateway board will not allow it(I assume).

Should be a decent boost. E2200 is what, 2.0Ghz? So it's equivalent to a 4.0Ghz Pentium D. The 820 is what, 2.8Ghz?

It should be equivalent to a 4.0 to 4.4 GHz PD, while sipping power.

The E2200 is superior to the PD820, I can't find any direct comparisons but suffice to say it will be faster more power efficient and cooler. It will be better at running TF2 not sure it will alleviate all your problems, best bet is to check it out once it is installed

That E2200 is just begging to be bumped from 2.0 to 2.7ghz with a simple FSB change. Pair it with a CM Hyper 212+ or Evo, and it should be fine as far as any extra heat it may produce.

A pentium d 820 is slower than x2 3600 for gaming and a e2200 should be about 10-30% faster or so, not night and day but definitely faster.

Are you sure your Gateway supports core2duo? Might have to at least upgrade the BIOS with the old one before swapping. There were a number of boards from that era that supported Pentium D 8xx and 9xx but not the core2duo.

Bottom line, it's going to be quite a bit faster. Now, quite a bit faster than a really slow chip isn't screaming, but your kids shouldn't have any problem playing TF2 with it, especially since the 440GT is a decent card for that.

Yeah I'm not expecting it to run like my pc but they don't have a job for 18 bucks its definitely worth it even if it just drops the temp, that 820 runs hotter than any processor I ever owned. I really just wanted to see some gaming benchmarks but Googleturns up nothing.

hopefully you can bsel mod to overclock. if your board supports 1066 then you should definitely look up the pin mod.

It will be a big difference, coming form a pentium d to just about anything newer is a big change. I jumped from a pentium d 930 to a celeron G530 and it was such a massive performance increase

Finally got the e2200 in my kids comp. Didnt require a bios update, just dropped it in and its been running cool and stable. Great chip for 18 bucks. Now question about the pin mod before I spend 20$ on a circuit writer. Here is a quote from oc.net -

•Some motherboards use the CPUID to calculate the CPU FSB and not the pins, this mod WILL NOT work on these motherboards.

Anyone know how I can determine this before I bother with the mod.

Don't use circuit writers. Look for those copper adhesive tapes for a few
bucks. Just cut out a tiny piece and place it covering the pins. It's completely reversible as you can just wipe away the copper tape if it doesn't work.

A roll of copper tape is the same price as the pen and for this mod i think the pen would be easier to use. Look at this connection that has to be made.

So, did you run any before & after benches?
