There are confirmed non-POST problem with Corsair 520/620 and Abit/Asus boads. Same with Antec Trio. Both should be avoided at this time.

Both should be avoided entirely or in combination with one another? So the Abit board I picked with another PSU like the one you suggested is ok?

There are confirmed compatibility with some Antec Trio and Corsair 520/620 PSUs when paired with Abit or Asus boards. To be safe, I would avoid those two models.

The Antec Earthwatts 430/500 is a single rail (advertised as dual) +12VDC build by Seasonic. It runs cool and quiet. PSU is backed by 3 yr warranty.

Thanks Serpent, I just posted this in the general hardware forum since I think it's a little off topic here. I appreciate the clarification on that though, saves me a mistake later.

Whelp, I now got my E4300 stable @ 3.4GHz with 1.5v and 4-4-4-15 907MHz 4GB G.Skill. I'm not sure if i'll leave it like this though as I don't know how safe running at 1.5v is specially with just an AC7Pro (but since it's so cold outside now my cpu temperature dropped about 3-4C so it might be ok until the summer).

I must have a lemon chip or something, can't even get it to boot into Windows at 3.1GHz without bumping VCore to like 1.465V, and it still crashes in less than 5 seconds in Prime95 -_- SoCal weather is kinda bad so I don't really want to try pushing voltage any higher just to see if it'd even work.

Clear CMOS and load Optimized Default. Boot back to BIOS. Manually set RAM voltage (2.1) and RAM timing to specs (5-5-5-15). Use 1:1 memory divider. Run Memtest86 test #5 for 50 loops to check RAMs. If okay, the raise Vcore to 1.465 and FSB to 305. Test with Prime95 Large mode.

Serpent, how much better would a antec be then say a cheapo 500w(what I have w/ my e4500) when it comes to overclocked ram and cpu (1.45V and 2.1V) plus two opticals, two case fans, tuniq one hd, a 680i and a 7900gs? Ive read they are sli certified. also how efficient would a normal psu be compared to one of these? I also may get one for a htpc I am building but am worried about the humming mentioned in some reviews, but it seems minor and probably wouldn't be heard at ten feet with a conversation going on. These psus look like a steal

My Ultra X-Finity 600 is FREE AR. I use it as the reference PSU for my test bench. It's difficult to guess the quality of your PSU without hooking it to a scope. The Antec Earthwatts PSUs should provide 80% efficiency under normal use (10-15 watts saved). The 80mm ADDA fan is very quiet under normal use. Your case and CPU fans will probably put out more noise.

Here's my contribution to this thread..

I come from the old cele 300a bumped to 450 ..That was fun..
but when I read serpent 's post and others..

I just had to jump on this...Well I bought 4 processors
2 e2160 L2 stepping
2 e2180 Mo stepping..

my first build I decided to go with Gigabyte g35 mobo..runs around 94 dollars..research I did indicated best pic..
1st set up is a e2160
got it first up to 9x333, then 9x350, then 9x356 =3.2
v-1.41
video is a his x1650 512meg cost $49
ram running at 890 gskill 5-5-5-15 v-2.1 4gig's
I only ran ortho for 10 min max.. heat go up to 66c but still stable with stock cooler..

Working on my next build , will the e2180 Mo stepping ..I hope to push this one up 3.7 hummmm ???

will report back later..

I just setup my 2nd rig
e2180 mo stepping was only able to get it to go 3.0 at v1.41
ram is super talent 667mhz @ 900mhz
MB is GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
TX cooler under load max temp is 48c which is very cool..

still trying more things to up the speed ,I not really comfortable with running voltage core at 1.505 .. seems a little hot up there..

bbf
note IMHO seems like the e2160 L2 overclocks better..

All of these chips are based on the same platform. Therefore, if you have a good board and RAMs, then you should be able to hit the nominal 3.2GHz, plus/minus 200MHz. Avoid 8x multi chip due to the 425MHz FSB cap of these chips.

I'm having serious issues with overclocking.

I've got an E2160 (SLA3H) and it won't do more than 2.34GHz (260x9). I'm using a Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 which was on the recommended motherboard list which is stickied at the top of the motherboards forum. I'm running at 1.35V. My memory is locked in at 866MHz with no problems. Memory is OCZ Vista Edition Gold (2x1GB).

I've tried cranking it up to the 275MHz bus and nothing. I've even tried the 300MHz bus (memory was clocked below 800MHz using the dividers in BIOS) while cranking it up to 1.45V core and it won't even post.

I'm using a Thermaltake W0070RUC TR2 Series 430W PSU and a massive Cooler Master Hyper TX 2 cooler. I don't have much stuff in my rig (200GB, DL DVD Burner, 7300 LE)

My idle temps at 2.34GHz is 32C and 47C under load. WTF is going on?

If want a real valid comparison you should take the 2160 out of the first computer and install the 2180 instead.

Otherwise it is Not a CPU comparison but rather a CPU, Mobo,Memory, and PSU combo comparison.

RAMs shouldn't be an issue if you set 1:1 memory divider with 5-5-5-15-2T timing and test with Memtest86.

PSU should not affect the oveclock...3.0 vs 3.4GHz.

Just my 2 cents of overclock my E4500 hits an absolute brick wall at 3.08. Have a GB P35C-DS3R and have tried every and I mean every conceivable combination of front side bus and multiplier and voltage!

SR,

the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L only allows you to change voltage and multiplier..2, 2.4, 2.5, 3, etc.. Not as many options as an abit..which is good for me..I tried different combinations of the ram..seem like 667 at 900 mhz is best.. Ran Ortho for 1.5 hr in a room ( room temp was 85 deg.) cpu loaded up and was only 66c nice..no crashes..Now that was bread boarded with no/case, just on a table top...

I wish it would have hit 3.7 and stuck, but it would not even post up..just rebooted 2x and went to default setting..which is cool. Highest I could Did not even have to reset bios..gigabyte boards seem well built..I used to use alot of abit boards way back when..

Remember abit BH6 and the celeron 300a? I must have built at least 15-20 systems back then..All overclocked..This reminds me a lot of the old days...Guess I must be showing my age..haha.

Thanks for your tips Serpent Royal..maybe one day will meet you face to face..

I don't want to break configuration on the first system...Its all boxed up nice in a case cables tied and so forth..But I do have a new in box e2160 with L2 steping? Hummmm??? let me think about that..I can live with 3 ghz , seems quite stable..

3.2 is better. But the weekend is short and I want to do other things..Haha..than mess computers right?? little joke..

Hi there.
I'm having problems getting my E4400 past 2.6Ghz, and was wondering if maybe you guys had any suggestions.
I've tried every combination that I can think of, and no matter what the instabilities set in at 2.59Ghz. From everything I've read, I should be able to get past this with no problem.
Here's my full system specs:

E4400 (L2 stepping)
Asus P5N-SLI motherboard
2x1Gb DDR2 667 Corsair Value Series 4-4-4-12 @266/ 5-5-5-15 @333
BFG 7800GT OC Edition
OCZ Stealth X Stream 600watt, 4x18 amp 12v+ rails
GeminII HSF with 2x 120mm fans on it
Total of 5 case fans 3x120mm and 2x80mm
80Gb SATA HDD

So I've tried underclocking the ram, to make sure it's not the ram. I've raised voltages and didn't seem to help at all. I don't know if I'm hitting my motherboards limit, or for some reason my chip just won't go that high.
My temps in core temp report as 32°idle, and so far 55° load @2.56Ghz with stock volts.

I've tried everything I know to try, any suggestions would be great...

Thanks in advance..

Thanks serpent, I will probably get an antec earthwatts for the rebuild of my htpc(p4 and mobo is going ) will probably get either 380 or 500 depending on weither or not I go intel or amd which boils down to to OC or not to OC and it probably will end up being the later since noise is more important than bleeding edge(also may get a real htpc case which means less room) and since I haven't found an intel integrated graphics solution as cheap as the amd 690 or the amd version of the 7050 we wound have to find a discrete video card.

Every thing I've read says 945 chipset should be good for at least 300, but I also remember some people had to do the BSEL mod to set a 1066 default on 800mhz E4xxx. So it might be an issue with the NB strap.

Since I went from NF4 to P35, I don't have any personal experience with any of the 9xx Intel chipsets. So take what I said with a grain of salt. But at least it's something to look into further.

Zach mucho thanks..

Too everyone, my 1st rig was a rosewill case with a 450 psu..nothing special..

2nd rig was a raid max case w/380 PSU.. pulled the 380 and put a 500 watt cool master ( looks slick) but IMHO it made no difference..just a stock PSU 400 watts and above should suffice..

just my 2cents.
