Can anyone help me, I can only get 2.8ghz out of my E4400! I bought a CNPS8000 zalman w/P5K-VM ASus motherboard w/ Patriot extreme ram. My PSU is an Ultra X-connect 500w. I don't know why when I go past 2.8ghz it won't go into windows. Antec P180 case. What is my problem?!? I've read the CNPS isn't a great HSF but is it that bad?!? Thanks

EDIT: I haven't done any voltage modding, is that my problem?

Spartan Niner
E2140 @ 2.8GHz (L2 Stepping)
8x350
1.325V (Stock)
Abit IP35-E
4x1GB SuperTalent DDR2-667 @ 700MHz CAS 5
Scythe Infinity HSF

VDIMM one notch up
CPU VTT one notch up

I may be able to push it further but haven't gotten the chance to stability test. 3.0GHz so far does not seem to like me.

@bleh, nice oc. 3ghz at 1.26v is amazing. What's your vid? I had a vid of 1.325V and with an e4500 took alittle over 1.3V to get to 3ghz and with a e21xx cpu that is amazing. Have you tried going higher yet?

@50 that mobo and ram should be good for more but you might want to try giving your cpu extra juice to get it stable. What are your temps? I haven't even heard of the 8000 series before but my reasoning puts them somewhere between a 7000 and 9000 series. The 7000 series are better than stock and not by much and the 9500 and 9700 are two of the non-tower air coolers around and are also very pretty(and then their is the bt which seems like it cools the whole case by itself), you should get better than stock perf. out of that cooler though, post your coretemp cpu core temps. Even a stock cooler should take that up to 3ghz. If nothing else works there is always the BSEL mod to default to the 1066 strap to see if you can get a higher oc

I like the idea of this thread. My results:

E2160 @ 3.0 ghz (L2)
9x333
1.425V in BIOS, 1.39V in cpu-z
Abit IP35-E
4GB (2x1gb Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800, 2x1gb Patriot Extreme DDR2-800) @ 800 mhz, 5-5-5-15, 1.95V
Cooler Master TX2 with Thermalright bolt kit

It hits about 74C under load, so this is probably as high as I'm going to push it.

I've tried every combination that I can think of, and no matter what the instabilities set in at 2.59Ghz. From everything I've read, I should be able to get past this with no problem.
Here's my full system specs:

E4400 (L2 stepping)
Asus P5N-SLI motherboard
2x1Gb DDR2 667 Corsair Value Series 4-4-4-12 @266/ 5-5-5-15 @333
BFG 7800GT OC Edition
OCZ Stealth X Stream 600watt, 4x18 amp 12v+ rails
GeminII HSF with 2x 120mm fans on it
Total of 5 case fans 3x120mm and 2x80mm
80Gb SATA HDD

So I've tried underclocking the ram, to make sure it's not the ram. I've raised voltages and didn't seem to help at all. I don't know if I'm hitting my motherboards limit, or for some reason my chip just won't go that high.
My temps in core temp report as 32°idle, and so far 55° load @2.56Ghz with stock volts.

I've tried everything I know to try, any suggestions would be great...

Thanks in advance..

I know you're still quite under their number, but Anandtech's review says this board "underperforms as an underclocker."

If raising voltages and taking RAM out of the equation don't work, I'd start thinking the board. You could have a bum CPU, but I haven't seen one top out that low yet.

Most likely. My E4400 topped out at 2.8GHz with the default voltage. It would boot at 3.0 but wouldn't remain stable. One bump in Vcore gave me 3.0 stable. After that, it started taking more. 1.465 set in BIOS would take me to 3.33. 1.505 got me 3.4 and 1.565 got 3.45. Scared to try any more!

I've got an E2160 (SLA3H) and it won't do more than 2.34GHz (260x9). I'm using a Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 which was on the recommended motherboard list which is stickied at the top of the motherboards forum. I'm running at 1.35V. My memory is locked in at 866MHz with no problems. Memory is OCZ Vista Edition Gold (2x1GB).

I've tried cranking it up to the 275MHz bus and nothing. I've even tried the 300MHz bus (memory was clocked below 800MHz using the dividers in BIOS) while cranking it up to 1.45V core and it won't even post.

I'm using a Thermaltake W0070RUC TR2 Series 430W PSU and a massive Cooler Master Hyper TX 2 cooler. I don't have much stuff in my rig (200GB, DL DVD Burner, 7300 LE)

My idle temps at 2.34GHz is 32C and 47C under load. WTF is going on?

I'll try to help you but it looks like you've don't a lot already. First suggestion is usually to lower the memory divider to 1:1 to take it out of the equation. Next is Vcore. Both of which you've done.

Make sure you're using the recommended Vdimm of 2.1v as well. Don't run it much over that though as they're warrantied to 2.1v+/-.5% (or 2.205v absolute max).

After that, try bumping NB voltage a notch or two. Needing a bit more MCH is not normal at that low FSB but it's not unheard-of.

1.265 bios in cpu-z its stated at 1.216. Ive tried to go to 3.2 ghz but I think its going to take at least 1.3 volts if not more to make it stable. Right now 3.0ghz is plenty fast for me while still being on stock heatsink. Once I get a freezer 7 ill probably try to crank her up to 3.2 ghz and beyond. O and with stock heatsink my highest temps ive seen according to everest have been about 60 celsius.

Can I use my ECS P4M800PRO-M-V2.0 MB with a E4500 and OC [11x300] to 3.3GHz? Please look at the 4 screenshots in the link, they show the BIOS screens for overclocking and RAM control. The FSB can be set by 1Hz up to 300Hz, but no higher. The CPU can be bumped 0.03V, but no more.

I'm still coming up on the curve and not sure if my Kingston DDR2 value ram will work. I could use my DDR 400 RAM in the same MB, but would rather use the DDR2, both 2x1GB.

I have a Big Typhoon for cooling.

Thanks

N5 ValueRAM should be able to hit 400MHz with 2.1V/5-5-5-15-2T. I'm not sure if the ECS can hit 300MHz FSB. You may need to do the pin mod if you have a chip that's good up to 3.3GHz with only 1.36Vcore. ECS makes okay NF4 boards, but that particular board is junk as an overclocking board (bastard DDR/DDR2).

Sell the board on Fleabay for $30. Wait for the Abit IP35-E to fall back to $61 AR.

Serpent is right hear. This board floats around on this forum alot, mostly in help threads for cheap processors. Like Serpent said find yourself a good deal on either a Abit IP35-E which on the hot deals thread is like 70 or 80 bucks, or a gigabyte p35-ds3l open box from newegg and sell the ecs. If you don't you could pin mod it to 266mhz, do a volt mod(if you pin mod to pins your're supposed to be able to have your processor lie to the mobo and say it has a higher VID) and then pin mod to 333mhz (harder to find but remember reading about it)and see if it works, the 333mhz one probably won't even with the volt mod.

Thanks Serpent and zach,

That's a great little MB, I have switched back&forth from DDR and DDR2 several times . . . no problems. Not interested in the Abit at this time. If I do get a E4500, that'll hold me to Nehalem. Ebay to big a pain to bother, wouldn't sell it if I could.

Look deeper in that review and see they had a X6800 running at 11x300 with the 0.03V boost. So why not a E4500. If I have to use 11x290, that's fine.

Do I have enough BIOS control to give it a whirl?

Thanks
Hermit

Thanks for the reply.
I just found a couple of reviews talking about that. I guess I have hit my mobo limit. But I'm wondering if it's just from the NB getting to hot. It runs really warm, even with fans blowing on it. I have some pics here of my tower.
But I'm wondering if I can cool my chipset more, if I could get a better overclock..

@hermit, they had a 266mhz fsb chip versus a 200mhz fsb chip so it would probably be tougher to get it to 300 or even 290. You can always try though and since you have an 11x multi that is still a great oc

Pin mod? can someone supply the link for this?

I'm really interested in getting one of these and OC'ing it. I already have an Antec Smartpower 2.0 500W power supply, it's dual rail though so I'm unsure if that will be a bad thing. 17A on one and 19A on the other. I'm probably going to get a 8800gt to go with it. Do any of you have feedback on using this power supply?

I've never tested, but have heard bad things about Smartpower PSUs. That doesn't mean they're bad, just that I've seen people refer to them as such. I love my little PSU (see sig) but I don't know how it would handle the beast GPU. Definitely a Thermaltake fan though. Serpent likes the Antec Earthwatts 500w you can get at staples.

I did have to RMA one. But it doesn't seem like it will be a disaster waiting to happen necessarily from some other posts I've read so I think I'm going to go for it. How do you like your IP35e?

Thanks zach,

I decided to wait until black friday and see what E2/4xxx shows up. Then I'll see what my ECS P4M800PRO-M can do. When I get that new s775 CPU, then I'll have enough pieces to re-assemble my Compaq sr5010nx. I'll then put that on eBay, they've been going for $200+, about what I paid.

In the mean time, I've ordered a 4200+ Manchester X2 to replace my 3000+ Winchester. Should give that PC a nice boost, especially for my text to binary compiler.
