Hey guys I just got my e6420 setup with a tuniq tower cooler, reading around I've seen most people have been able to get it to 3.2 on stock volts; however, for me I cant even get it to 3.2 without pushing the volts past 1.4. I even bumped up the MCH +0.2 to no avail, I dont want to push the volts any further for fear of messing up the CPU as I am a novice overclocker.

I can get it to 3.0 on 1.38 volts, so I'm wondering is the overclock dependent on cooling at all, because I noticed the tuniq pipes did not get very hot and It looks like the tower is a little sideways; however my temps after 8 hours of orthos were 52C at 3.0ghz and 30-35 idle. The mobo is DS3 btw, and week is L49G. I just find it weird that I can get it to 3.0 easy on 1.38, but to get it to 3.2 I need alot of volts, is it due to the improper heatsink or just a limitation on the cpu?

thanks.

The overclock depends on temps, but not all processors are born as equals so you might have gotten a lemon, then again there are a lot of other variables that affect the overclockability of your proc and other hardware. Personaly dont have much experience with C2D and so far have only tikered arround a bit with a e4300 that ran 3ghz on stock voltage

Yeah also how do you let your memory and what kind of memory running. I use with my E6600 on the Quad GT the 1:1 instead of 2:3 ect...

The memory is OCZ Revision 2 platinum, at 4-4-4-15 timings at 3.0ghz, it wont even boot if I leave it at those timings not even at 5-5-5-15 trying to get to 3.2ghz

excuse me? overclocking is racing temps, not dependant on it.

Overclocking is more on the luck of the draw. Think of a card game, where i have 50 cards and you have to pick one at random.

You can tweek the odds of a good overclocking chip if you know what Batch/PO it was from. When you see letters like These:

My 3.75ghz E6600:
L631B120

My Crappy X3220 Xeon @ 3.375
L640F038

L <-- i have no clue.
6 <--- year made
40 <--- week
B <---- batch

The rest of the numbers, i dont think are important.

From my knowledge, The best Chips are B In fact the hierarchy of how well they overclock is this:

B > A > G > F

Another thing you guys want are early week chips. If i stand correct, my friend is using a L628B at near stock settings. Its such a waste, because when testing the chip out i scaled it up to 3.9ghz @ 1.45v

This i believe was the end of C2D chips that can push higher then 3.85ghz on water. After 28B, they all require phase of some sort. So if you have a Week 28B chip. Consider yourself very very fortunate.

That is how you determin how well your chip does. When you overclock, your racing the temps. If the temps win at top, you stop. If you can beat the temps at the race, then you stop at your chips limits.

And dont PM me on how your chip can do, From what ive been seeing here it is:

B -> 3.6 -> 4.0ghz 3.6 is a piece of cake for all B's
A -> 3.5 -> 3.8
G -> 3.3 -> 3.6
F -> 3.1 -> 3.5 <GOD I HATE F's>

Of course there are some flukes. Like people with F's that can do 3.8ghz. But from the majority i see, this is how i see it as.
