Ebay and shipping costs

I underestimated the shipping cost for a package I just mailed. I estimated $30 but it cost $39.35. This was priority mail. I could have used parcel post but it would have taken 3-5 weeks to get there, and I doubt the buyer would be happy with that.

Since I made the mistake I was just going to eat the cost, but what would you do? Would you even bother asking the buyer if they would help contribute to the extra cost or would you just eat it and not say anything at all?

How big was the package? If it was small enough, should have used one of those flat rate priority boxes...~$10 i think for up to 80lbs.

Yea, just eat the cost. They bought your item for $xxx, and paid $30 for shipping. You can go back and say that you want $10 more!

Well, I wouldn't be like "Yo bitch, give me more money for shipping!"
If I would have asked, I woould have asked politely and said it wasn't necessary but I would appreciate it.

If the person asked nicely and was nice throughout the transaction prior, i'd probably give them the extra money if they provided a copy of the receipt.

I would go online and get an estimate for fedex ground. IME, it will more than likely be a lot cheaper to ship it that way(if it is not to a PO Box that is). I would then let the buyer know of the change and the fedex tracking number. If fedex ground is not an option, then I would eat the cost and chalk it up to experience(which I have personally done quite a few times before discovering fedex ground-I will not use UPS under ANY circumstances).

If you're talking about domestic USPS Priority Mail, you should check out the rates for FedEx Ground. The USPS has been raising their prices so much that it now makes more sense to go FedEx Ground on packages larger than 2lbs... unless you can fit it in one of those flat rate boxes.
