Hah, what a great project:

Zero to 60 in 4.9: (not bad, stock factory Mustang is 5.1!)

A little surprised we never got a "New Delorian" the way we got a "New Beetle".

Feels like there is a market for an updated, even limited run, model. Feels like the kind of thing Musk would do just for nerd cred.

They did, it's called the Delorean Alpha 5. Electric supercar. Zero to 60 in 3.4, 1000hp, 300+ mile range. Supposedly coming out late 2024:

Wasn't the original DeLorean plan calling for a rotary?

Yup! It was originally supposed to have the Comotar, which was the Citreon Wankel rotary engine. This guy followed through & put a 300hp 2L 3-rotor rotary engine into it:

It was also supposed to be a flagship safety vehicle (one of the original names for the DMC-12 was the "DSV" for "Delorean Safety Vehicle"). They donated two of the early prototypes to the government for the NHTSA to use for airbag crash tests. Unfortunately, the Delorean ultimately shipped with no airbags, a Y-frame design (don't get t-boned!!), and a fiberglass body.

From reddit:

This video is not footage of the Delorean’s safety crash test and it is often incorrectly shared as it failing the test.

It is footage of an independent study conducted by the NHTSA on the effectiveness of retrofitting airbags to vehicles that didn’t come with them. Delorean provided some prototype cars with no glass and doors that couldn’t latch properly for this test.

You can read the final results from the paper yourself https://www.deloreanmuseum.org/uploads/1/8/0/7/18075613/crashtest_museum_sml.pdf

“Although the outward appearance of the crashed vehicle looks as if the crash was quite severe (Figures 39 through 41), the opposite is true. The vehicle crushed approximately 44 inches but the intrusion into the passenger compartment was again confined to the lower firewall/toeboard area and some console axial collapse (Figure 42)”

“Second, the Delorean proved to be a very well designed vehicle in terms of allowing a relatively great amount of front end crush without adversely compromising the “survival space” in the compartment.”

The point of a crash test is to evaluate how well the passengers survive, not how well the car survives, you want the car to absorb all the forces and be a wreck afterword.

On a tangent, they found a FIFTH gold Delorean right before COVID hit:

These were originally made for an American Express promotion back in the 80's:

Electro-chemical plated, SUPER fun concept:

-Ughhhh outside of the Gull Wing doors (which are more reminiscent of Tesla now than Delorian) that essentially bears no resemblence to the original at all other than also being a car.

Yeah. They're targeting late 2024, but I don't know how they plan on achieving it. It costs like a billion dollars (literally) to bring a new car to the market. Plus you need spare parts, training, technicians, tech support, etc. for it.

My childhood dream was to own a DeLorean. I finally got to check one out IRL and, among other things, it was a little too snug for me, as I planned to use it as a daily driver. The PRV engine, although low-power for today's standards (130hp), is actually pretty reliable, and there's a whole slew of aftermarket improvement parts (engine upgrades, new engines, electric conversions, door struts, improved stainless-steel frames, modern fuel pump systems, etc.) available. But I'm pretty happy with my Ford these days lol.
