Then why are those my only financial options? can I work double shifts and make 48 while everyone else is making 28? Or just get a better job than everyone else making 18 so everything stays nice and cheap while i make out like a bandit?

It's just a thought experiment. Like the one where the professor offers everyone a 95% grade but only if everyone agrees and some people who wouldn't get a 95% vote it down because they don't want people who "didn't work as hard" to get a good grade.

24-28 makes the most sense by far. It's no contest.

In an isolated system though, with 24-28 the inevitable result is that everything costs what's appropriate for 28 (because capitalism demands that you squeeze every drop of blood from the stone) and the 24 is gonna be lacking. Everyone on 18 means 18 is the most capitalism has to work with, and in all likelihood in this isolated system everyone's 'fun budget' is the same, so there's only so much to leech.

I don't care if I'm making 24 if my buying power is lower than if it was 18.

It's not an economic isolated community, the shops might be in the next town, where people have different salaries.

30 years ago, I wouldn't get out of bed for less than $25/hr...Nowadays...even that ain't gonna do it. Let's start with $40 and see if that gets me moving.

Nope, communism does not work. Some are better, smarter and more productive than others and deserve a better pay.
