ECS Desknote comparison to Asus

hi, i was searching on ebay, and found out that Asus now sell Desknote.
i was wondering if anybody has use the Asus Desknote before?
and if there are review for asus desknote?
i did like to know how Asus desknote measure up against more exprience ECS desknote.
I like how Asus has built in memory card reader (ECS doesn't) but ECS is alot cheaper.
any input would be appreciated.
anybody know when will Desktnote stop using share memory?

ok.. I'm curious. Why do you want a desknote? I personally cannot stand them.. so this is a legitimate question. no thread crapping intended.

I mean if you're going to pay more for something smaller than a desk top but still functions the same as a desktop, why not just save the money and buy a desktop? or spend a little more and buy a laptop.. at least then you'd have a battery.

for reason, i can take it to my office, or home.
and i find that 99% of time, i use my old laptop with wall plug in.
so no batterly is not an issue for me.
i also like that fact that it use desktop component
i can add more memory, or change a cpu at not much expense.

i don't concur. my brother picked up an ECS desknote for $700 at fry's. it is perfect to shuttle between home, school, and his apartment. it uses desktop memory, desktop processor, and notebook hard drive and DVD. when you consider that the LCD is $250, the hard drive is $100 and the laptop DVD is $50, processor and memory $100--you are getting a barebone system for $200--about what a shuttle SSF costs. not a bad deal if you ask me. you could not upgrade a CPU on a true laptop and the memory is more expensive and the whole device costs $500 more for the same specs!

You *CAN* buy an external battery for the Desknotes. Dunno how long it'll last though. Prolly not long.

I have a follow-up question ... any problems with heat in those desknotes? I imagine a desktop CPU would get pretty hot...

There's a decent review of the Asus D1 at SFFTech I still haven't found anyplace selling it yet.

I got my wifey the ECS A929 a few months back, and she hasn't had any problems. Paired it up with an AMD 2000+, and you don't want to set it on your lap for too long cuz it's pretty warm when running. But it was a lot of bang for the buck, and it looks like the Asus has got even more features.

On the Desknote site in the specs for the A980 they refer to an upgrade from the SIS video chip to a GeForce4 420 with it's own memory. I kind of like the A980 (which is sans LCD), reminds me of an old Amiga/Atari system.

The problem I have with the desknotes is that they cost too much. $700-800 is too much when for the same money or less you could get a cheapo dell or build a cheapo AMD box and pair it up with a cheapo LCD monitor. Now that LCD monitors are in the sub-$300 range it just doesn't make sense to me to go the Desknote route. Two years from now you'll will more than likely have to throw it away and buy a new one. Whereas with the BYO route you can keep the LCD monitor and buy or build a new cheapo box.

Upgradeable? IMHO they are "upgradeable" in the sense that a PC with 4 PCI slots is "upgradeable" ... that is ... technically speaking it's upgradeable but in reality who would want to. Mobos, procs, mem will change so much in the next year or two that any "upgradeability" is an illusion.

$700-$800 for a full system, that is semi-portable with an external battery, and is more upgradable than the dell. Also, for the cheap dell, you will have to jump through rebate loopholes. I don't like that much, myself.
