K7S5A seems to be DOA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just bought a K7S5A mobo on the basis of readings here and elsewhere.

I put the mobo & system together (950 Mhz Duron, 256Mb SDRAM stick) put all the drives in and nothing. Checked all my connections, seating of cards, RAM, etc; even cleared the CMOS. But it won't boot or even (I suspect) POST.

I have power .... can hear the drives whir up, CPU fan spins, and getting lights on CD and HD. But no video signal and no beeps whatsoever. Tried a different working video card and same thing happens.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks ...

Reseat the RAM and video card at least half a dozen times. This board has extremely tight slots. I thought I was going to break my board I had to push the AGP card so hard. CRUNCH! Yeah, now it's in.

Try reinstalling RAM on the bench. You'll have to push REAL hard. Push in the video card real hard as well.

Connect the power supply while on the bench and see if you can get it to work.

Try with only 1 stick of Ram, and nothing but the Video Card Installed (you probally did already).
Try re-seating the RAM too, that happens a lot....... hmmm..... trying to think...........
Also, I'm sure u tried this too, but try Clearing the BIOS, for about a minute, and restarting it.
hmm chapjoe sounds familiar......

This may sound dumb but check the PSU for the voltage setting...I bought a case new out of the box that was set to 220, something I NEVER check...needless to say, no beeps no video no nothing....flip the switch on the PSU and all is well (after 10 hours of troubleshooting LOL!) Lesson learned...it's not always the MB.

The lack of beeps makes me think you should start with the power supply and CPU. When the vid card or memory aren't seated properly you get audio errors unless you haven't connected the speaker properly or at all. Try another CPU if you have one and please list your power supply's brand, wattage, and combined output.

Another thing is to check and make sure you aren't shorting on something.

Try taking the mobo out of the case and see if it posts there. The K7S5A has some traces that are REAL close to the mounting holes, you may need to use the paper washer things to make sure the posts don't touch any of the traces.

If you read up on it, I'm sure that you're using a decent power supply
at least 300W? Right? Right?

You most likely have a dead board. I have the exact same situation. Ordered two and only one worked. The other one would power up all devices, but no video, despite various different configuration. I believe I read somewhere that this was a common occurrence.

Tenoc.....even a 200W PSU would get you to a beep or some indication of an error. But at the minimum, any test should be with video card and memory only...heck even without memory you should get beeps if the PSU is working correctly.

I had this board and I had problems with it too.

In my case, it would not post and I would hear no beeps. What I ended up doing was removing ALL the cards, RAM, wiring (speakers, power button, reset, etc.) and the power line. All that was left on the board was the cpu and hsf. Reset the bios via the jumper pins and leave it. Remove the battery and leave it off for about a min. Reinstall the battery then put the bios reset jumper pin back to normal. Install only one stick of RAM and install only the video card. Hook up all the wiring and lastly hook up the power to your motherboard.

Take a deep breath and turn on the power. If it post, you can install one component at a time until you get your system up and running. Good luck! Let us know what happens.
