That $706 gorilla sitting in the middle of the room makes it difficult to do much within a $1,400 budget.

You might also consider getting a different CPU, with an unlocked multiplier, to keep from bottlenecking that video card.

The build looks good overall, but I'd make a couple of changes:

- GPU: The GTX 780 Ti just isn't worth it relative to its cost. You can get a GTX 780 instead, which is nearly as fast but $200 cheaper. The GTX 780 also has 3GB of VRAM, which means you can avoid the annoying 2GB is too little, 4GB is too expensive split on the GTX 770.
- PSU: I would get a slightly nicer power supply like the Seasonic S12II 620W for $70. There's nothing particularly wrong with the CX600, it's just a little lower quality that what would normally go into a $1400 machine.

i researched the cpu extensively so im keeping it. i am probably going to get a 770 instead.

You'll be bottlenecked right from the start, and it will only get worse with newer games. That CPU is not fast enough for a GTX 780, let alone a 780 Ti. For gaming, you'll be much better off with an overclocked 4670K.

It's always important to build a balanced system, and spending half of your budget on a video card should indicate that there's something off balance.

I'm the one that figured out his build.

The reason I chose the Xeon was because its pretty much an i7 without iGPU. I see how it would be bottlenecked.

It's generally not a bad choice for someone who's really trying to save a few dollars and get a quad with HT in their system for some particular purpose, like video editing.

But for someone who's about to spend $700 on a video card for a system intended just for gaming, it's not the right choice. He may need the HT for editing, but he needs the ability to overclock even more.

It's not just for gaming. He plans on rendering videos as well. Is a 780ti/780 really going to be bottlenecked by an i7?

It depends on the game, but a quad-core at 3.3GHz will bottleneck a 780 in games like Deus Ex, Hitman, Crysis 3, and BF4 multi-player, among games I've tested. Other games won't be bottlenecked at all, such as Tomb Raider and most of BF4 single-player.

But the bottleneck isn't that huge

I think the point they are making, is that if you are going to spend $1,400, which is enough to put together a powerful rig, that you shouldn't hamstring yourself with future bottlenecking.

While it might not be a big deal with today's games, that next gen shooter coming out might not run the way you expect next year or the year after. If it was $800, I wouldn't worry about it, but for $1,400, you should be doing as much future proofing as you can.
