I'm willing to bet a lot of Tesla owners are NOT Trump fans...I think he will take a lot of flak if he helped get Trump back into power...enough to have an effect on his companies, so I'm not sure if he would risk that.

In reality, most leftists are unaware of their contradictory views. I doubt they'd even make the distinction that they've supported Trump if they own/buy a Tesla and Elon gets Trump back into power.

As an example, the left champions women's rights and is all for anti sexism/mysogyny.

They also support Islam, which is all about sexism/mysogyny, for fear of appearing islamophobic.

I'm betting he just bought twitter since he wanted Trump unbanned.

Ah yes, the tolerant left.

If Elon brings back Trump and leftists stop buying his cars.. they are hurting the climate.

If Elon brings back Trump and leftists continue buying his cars.. they are indirectly supporting Trump.

They need to figure out how to be consistent in their views.

well, no one would ever say you aren't consistent. There's that.

I don't think he has the juice to do that. More to the point, why should it matter? Twitter is a garbage can, the whole thing stinks, now it might have a more musky stink.

So, he decided not to join the board after all.
I am guessing someone brought him up to speed on the complexities of running an absolutist free speech platform on the internet with all its current vectors of exploit etc… and in the wake realizing that this would deter him from his main goal Mars.

Or he realized that he’d open up another front SEC could get at him.

Problem with being the richest guy around and having Aspergers? Who the hell is gonna check you. Dude is not grounded.

I really don't think he is as pro-trump as people think. He just wants to be an asshole on Twitter, just like Trump.

I thought the point of not joining the board was the option of a hostile takeover.

If that’s musks plan then what is the future of Twitter? I already don’t use the service so it makes no difference to me but social media is a cancer on society so I hope it does fail.

Cancer on society. So very true. It has zombified an entire generation, and just imagine what the next generation will look like? All I know about twitter is that I too never use it. And facebook sucks. Everyone I know on facebook preaches peace and love but dare you not LIKE one of their kitty hugging a duck pictures and they get all pissy. I love those FB posts where people threaten other people to SHARE their post or else... you will be unfriended. And guess what? I NEVER share their damn insane post. No wonder Q thrives and conspiracy theories flourish. People are freaking nutz and most are my own relatives.....
I guess Anandtech is about my only frequented social media outlet. And even that is a mystery to me.

There's a 15% ownership limit to joining the board plus fiduciary duties to always act in the interest of the firm. He's either a) lost interest; b) is planning an actual hostile takeover.

I'm pretty uncomfortable with any single private individual having that much power to shape the public discourse, hope that the government adopts universally applicable standards for social media platforms to preempt any "free speech absolutist" turn Twitter might take.

I used to like Elon but he’s turned sour and will surely corrupt twitter. He’ll 100% be in support of giving people voices that shouldn’t be heard.

When he was about building electric cars and building up for a trip to Mars, I was all for it. Once he started tweeting, I soured on him. Guess I liked the vision not the man.

I believe in more speech. The answer to "bad" speech is more speech, not less. If our ideas are superior, they will win out. In a debate, I don't want my opponent silenced, I want them to say their mind and I will say mine. Then we can bounce thoughts off of one another. That is how we all learn. That is true tolerance. Who am I to say that my ideas are the only acceptable ones?

I think that Twitter needs an overhaul. Trump is banned, but Putin still has an account. Please explain how that is fair.

You clearly haven’t been paying attention to the last decade or so. The better ideas don’t win out, the truth doesn’t trump misinformation and more speech doesn’t mean better debate. Why? Because speech doesn’t equal one person one voice. One person with resources can drown out entire countries.

I don’t have a solution but our democracy will die as our freedoms are exploited.

Here is a long but good read about your thinking isn’t possible anymore.

Ooh another new one.

What people don’t understand is that what Twitter is doing is freedom of speech and freedom of association, exactly the rights you claim to love.

Twitter has no obligation to publish your speech for free on their platform, like with most businesses they require you to behave yourself. If you don’t, you get 86ed. This is no different than tossing out an angry, ranting drunk at the bar. Is the bar violating your free speech?

If it was just that. But these town halls has been weaponized by all sorts of different entities with sinister agendas.
Suppose you could browse twitter but not interact unless you’re verified and identifiable. You know so you dont have the option of hiding behind a veil of anonymity to give cover for all kinds of bullshit…. then maybe it could work.

This is exactly right. If Musk does take over twitter and decides to let the twits say whatever they want that's proper as well.

I agree. It’s a private business and they get to decide what content they host.

It would probably be a bad business decision for Musk to do that as evidenced by the failure of Twitter clones focused on that idea but it’s his money and if he wants to light it on fire in defense of shitposting that’s his right.

Seems like Musk didn't like the terms that came with joining the board and has decided against it. Now he can just make demands as one of the largest stakeholders and they'll have to at least entertain them.

While Musk is a problematic person, let's not use his mental condition as an insult, please! There are plenty of better people than him who have Asperger's.

As it stands, I don't know what Musk buying Twitter would actually accomplish; it wouldn't get the SEC off his back, and there's no particularly grand vision he could fulfill like with SpaceX (make humanity an interplanetary species) or Tesla (eliminate combustion engine cars).

Full stop. Am Asperger. And I fully understand why I shouldnt run the world.

To the other bit, I am sure he somehow envisions this "town hall" to somehow be a beacon between Mars and Earth. *SOMETHING* like that.

Has it also been confirmed that Musk has Asperger's? I recall the only source of that information being Musk, on SNL, the one time.

Sure, it can fit if you want it to, but still seems dubious coming from a shameless attention whore that seems capable of playing every possible victim card in order to soften his growing D. Vader persona.
