Emachines not booting up.

I know I know I know...Emachines suck. Or at least that's what I've gathered from around the net. But it's the only desktop option I have right now so help would be much appreciated.

I was reinstalling Windows on my machine and the first thing I did was open it up and reset the CMOS using jumpers. Well, I pulled the wrong one, but I put it back and cleared it with the right one. So I pulled the two jumpers off and put them back on.

I try booting. I plug it in, turn on the power supply, hit the button, and the fans spin up...But nothing shows on the monitor. So this had to have been something I did wrong or simply didn't do at all, right?

I've tried everything. I unplugged everything and put it back together, held the power button for 30 seconds, etc... Nothing has worked.

Any ideas?

Gah! It doesn't have a manual it has a 'User Guide.' The best I can do for you is have you contact them for support. No manual alone would keep me from buying on of these pos. If you can post pics, we might be able to help further. Good luck.

Okay I'm downloading the user guide right now. It wasn't my choice my mom gave it to me and it's the only desktop I have right now. :/ I'm working on buying parts so that I can build my own but money is an issue at the moment. I'll see what I can do and if I don't get any further I'll post pictures. Thanks for the quick response!

Well what do you guys think then? Should I abandon the cause and just strip the thing for parts or is there a magic trick I can try before resorting to that?

Well, before resorting to that, you could: Check and see that the jumpers are on securely. Check to see if everything is seated properly in the motherboard (Ram, video card if you have one, etc). Make sure everything is plugged in securely and that nothing inadvertently came loose.

Also, you might want to take a look at the mobo and see if there are any bulging or leaking caps. I had an emachines computer a long time ago, that had the same symptoms you are describing... turned out to be leaking caps. If that's the problem, the mobo is dead.

Here is what usually happens with those the power supply and motherboard short out the 5 volt power so that you will see the fans spin and lights come on but there is no 5 volt supply to power the CPU.

Once in a while you will get lucky and it will be just the PSU so if you have another PSU you can try it just be aware if the board is shorted it will most likely short the new PSU as well.

It sounds like you may not have put the jumpers back on correctly. According to what I found googling this model uses Intel motherboard D845GVSR. Check this manual and make sure the layout of the board is the same then check the jumper setting on page 37.

Just to level set, the PC was working ok until you starting pulling jumpers, right? I have repaired several emachines that had the common Bestec PSU / motherboard failure but it would be odd that this happened when you decided to open the case up and reset jumpers.
