Email Fowards : Need help!

I am the network admin so I have access to everything. I have one or two #@(*$@ people who think every email they get is just so abso-fscking-lutely hilarious. They send the FW to a email workgroup (staff) so that everyone gets it.

How can I prevent these people, without taking away regular email privelages, from sending fowards?

We are using Windows 2000 server, active directory, etc etc.

You're the network admin. Send an automated response, or an email from you, or talk to their superiors...

Is there not a way I can prevent the foward from passing through the email server?

First off, what is wrong with what they are doing? Are they sending inappropriate emails or are they using up all of the network resources? How big is the email list hey are forwarding to? If it is actually the whole company, can't you restrict access to this email adddress (probably a good idea anyways)?

you mean you told them directly to stop and they didn't?

Yes I told them directly to stop! but they feel that just because few do not like it, then they can just delete them.

Nobody wants fscking fowards, they are annoying and they take up network resources as well. The email is about 80 people.


I just want to be able to block ID10Terror@asdf.com from sending to staff@asdf.com which is the email list.

I don't know if this is still the best way of doing it. If this is something against the "firm policy", you should bring it up with your boss or whoever is next up on the chain and have them deal with the violators.

What mail applicaition are you running? In Exchange you can set permissions on who can email who, have an Exchange book at work but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on if you're you or me =]) I'm not at work right now. I would assume that sendmail or all the other major mail apps could do something similar.

As others mentioned, I would also suggest a non-technical answer to the problem. Send a formal, polite, yet firm email to the user and cc: their manager on it. If the problem doesn't stop, escalate from the manager on up. Affect their reviews/bonus whatever you have to do. Keep records of the attempts that you have made to get them to stop. A formal policy on appropriate email/internet usage may be a good idea.

We are running Exchange Server! I still want them to be able to email, but just not fowards.

Let me sneak this in here one more time for the record, I still recommend a non-technical yet diplomatic solution to the problem. If their abusing access they should have it's a personnel problem, not a technical one.

Anyways, IIRC, you can go into Exchange System Mangler right click on the object/dl, properties, security, and set the appropriate permissions so they can't send any emails to it. I don't believe it's granular enough to differentiate between forwards and regular emails. They'll get the picture. Honestly I have little Exchange experience so this could be utter bs but I think it's right, if not it should point you in the right direction and you can google for more help or change the title to reflect it's an Exchange ?.

Ok, I figured it out.

I went into the Active Directory -> Groups -> "Staff" -> Right Click (Properties) -> Exchange General -> Message Restrictions and checked "From Everyone Except:" and added those who continue to send fowards to this list.


It doesnt distinguish from fowards but that is all I could find. It would be nice to find something that would block any email with "FW:" in the subject.
