Employee tardiness problem........

So I've got an employee who always goes on these streaks of a few days of not making it to work 'til about 10 after.

I've talked w/ him, written him up, told him that HR has had it, it's got to be 8am and no later than 8:05 (even giving him a break).

His problems arise when he rides the local bus system to work because his roommate can't give him a ride.

Any suggestions??

(Don't really want to can him, but man this is getting old & makes me look bad when I turn in time cards)

you must be his boss first and foremost. If he's been warned and still won't step up, it's time for him to go.

it is if HR is getting riled

we are much more relaxed here, and if thats the culture, thats fine, but it sounds like the OP works somewhere where promptness is expected.

If you've talked to him & written him up, then he should try to take an earlier bus.

I mean, I'm a couple minutes late once in a while but management has never said boo. I still beat 95% of the other staff here. However, if they actually said something I would never be late again, ever.

if its only 10 minutes. then it really depends on what kind of worker he is.

I had one guy that was always 10-30 minutes late. but he was one of hte best workers i had. there were many times he would stay 1-3 hours late to make sure stuff was done and done right. Not to mention he would work through lunch if needed.

i was willing to ignore little stuff to keep him around.

I just had to deal with this at my job. It was basically that the person needs to come in on time or they will no longer be working at the company.

It would depend on what type of job it is. If its some kind of job where he still gets his work done, then personally I don't see what the issue is. But if its a matter of him being 10 minutes late creates more work for everyone else covering for him until he shows up, then its an issue.

Personally I'm of the opinion that as long as you get your work done, then the actual hours you work shouldn't really matter. Otherwise you are just getting paid to sit around and not do anything other than post on ATOT.

Ya, it's only 10 minutes.

HR in this case is really the owner of the company. He handles payroll himself & he establishes a conduct of promptness in the facility he runs. (I run a satellite for him)

He does work hard when he's at work, thus I'd hate to lose him, but it's almost as if he just wants to make sure he's not held down by "the man". (Yes, there could be a racial thing to this too.......no, he's not black).

I don't mind a few minutes late, but Friday, yesterday and today have been 8:12, 8:11 and 8:10 respectively.

I, honestly, don't care.....(I've got the rest of the employees walking the line) but it's just frustrating 'cuz I look like a pushover & I'm really not. I just, really don't want to turn into a 'prick' of a boss. I create a good work environment & give these folks all the breaks I can & we do well.....(we grew substantially last year & all shared in the profits).

Just frustrating.....:|

Yeah, I guess. I'd just have a hard time firing someone over 10 minutes, especially if he would be willing to cut his lunch a little short or stay later. But then again, I'm not a business person.

If he rides the bus that could make it near impossible for him to always be exactly on time.
I think I am 10 minutes late about 5 days a week on average.
Could you knock his schedule back to 8:15?

yup, ask him what the bus schedule is (though he should have told you about this) and make him work from 8:15 -> 5:15. If he is a good employee make it work
If he isn't, can him.

edit : another thing: this guy isn't supposed to be opening a store at 8 or anything like that is he? If he's supposed to open at 8 he needs to find a way to either get there or get a new shift/job.

totally depends on the situation. For instance, I can be late, but if our receptionist was late every day and the phone went unanswered, that obviously is a problem.

If it's an office job, i don't see the problem. You should talk to your boss about the situation

i am anywhere between 8:00 and 8:15 (typically 8:05 for the past week), but I stay after and I am willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Because of this, my boss understands and doesn't really complain about those 5-10 minutes. ON TOP OF WHICH, i don't take smoke breaks for 5-10 minutes 4 times a day. If people want to b!tch about being 5-10minutes late, I think it is fair to b!tch about smokers :x
