What part of NAACP do you not get?

What part of founded in 1909 do you not get?

There also exists the United College Negro Fund but I dare say going around calling black people 'Negro' isn't acceptable.

Want another one? Are you a negro or are you colored? Make up your mind.

Or are you a man?

The UNCF was also incorporated decades ago. If you can find an example of the use of "colored" or "negro" by blacks or anti-racist groups from the last two decades, I will give you one million (chocolate, of course) cookies.

I don't need to. Blacks are the ones with the sliding scale of what is offensive and yet their very culture perpetuates it.

I'm done with this thread. No double standards. No double standards. Embrace true equality and take back the language. Live MLKs dream.

Please be specific. I assume you are trying to get at the use of "n gger" by blacks, as an example of whites being oppressed. Well, this debate has been had a million times over. Suffice to say, certain language is only appropriate if you are a member of the group that it describes. Blacks can say "n gger," homosexuals can call each other "i love you," and you can call whites "cracker" or "beloved patriot" or "redneck."It's called reclamation. It's not rocket science.

EDIT: I fully support the rights of the intellectually disabled to reclaim "retard."

It was apparent from the beginning that this could perhaps be beyond your present comprehension skills.

Sorry to lose you.

And as I've said over and over again - equality mean equality. I have a dream, can you live it? I do! Can you?

Stop using "retard" as an insult.

Are you saying that you're worried "developmentally challenged" is going to become a street slang insult?

I am not worried at all. I think it is a futile effort because people will find another name that will have the exact same meaning and derogatory tone.

Why do you think that? Is there another word with the exact same meaning and derogatory tone of "n gger?" Is there one that directly replaces "wise and beautiful woman?" Is there one for "lovely human?" The answer to these three questions is no.

So in the meantime would it kill you to drop the term "retard" as an insult from your lexicon?

I do not agree. Certain descriptors carry negative connotations. Think of n gger, beloved patriot, Chinaman, lovely human, ***, she-male. Simply replacing these negative words with neutral adjectives like black, Hispanic, Asian, Homosexual, Lesbian, trans woman drastically changes ones tone.

I see no reason why retard would be any different.

Part of tolerating or respecting someone is referring to them in the manner of their choosing. Most people with intellectual disabilities do not like being called "retard," and especially do not like the word's use when referring to able-minded people who may have done something stupid.

It's simply common courtesy to refrain from doing or saying offensive things, whether you agree that they are offensive or not.

Offensive is in the eye of the beholder. Calling people retards was at one point a medical phrase meant to replace other terms like idiot or imbecile. It morphed into an insult as well. If you get rid of it a new name comes up. I mean, look at your list. You can add so many more words onto that list that have the exact same meaning and derogatory tone.

I personally dont really care. I happen to find these efforts futile.

Kill me? No, but I doubt it will be dropped from my vocabulary either.

Do you live under a rock or are this oblivious to the world?

Really? You cant think of any other words that can replace those above?

Words have replaced their descriptive meaning, but not their negative connotations. No word to describe black Americans is as offensive as "n gger." No word to describe women is as offensive as "wise and beautiful woman." No word to describe gays is as offensive as "lovely human."

This campaign isn't about changing prejudices about differently abled people, it's just about telling everyone that "retard" is offensive, so have some respect and choose another word.

Mental retardation is a medical diagnosis not some hate term. I find the term 'special' much more offensive to our intelligence considering they are a societal liability/drain all around.

Like me, they dont care. More important things to worry about than what words we use to call each names.

Special Olympics has started an initiative to end the use of the words "retard" and "retarded" with the End the R-Word Campaign. Special Olympics argues that by putting a stop to the r-word fosters a larger message of inclusion and acceptance, for those with intellectual disabilities, who have been one of the most socially isolated minorities.

Thoughts on the campaign? On putting a stop to the use of the r-word?

This campaign is retarded.

Bingo... I like George Carlin's take on bad words... There are no bad words, only bad intentions. You can express those bad intentions in any number of ways. A word itself has no power.

Why are they wasting time and money on this again?
