How old are you? It hasn't been acceptable to call blacks "colored" for decades.
What part of NAACP do you not get?

The UNCF was also incorporated decades ago. If you can find an example of the use of "colored" or "negro" by blacks or anti-racist groups from the last two decades, I will give you one million (chocolate, of course) cookies.

I don't need to. Blacks are the ones with the sliding scale of what is offensive and yet their very culture perpetuates it.

I'm done with this thread. No double standards. No double standards. Embrace true equality and take back the language. Live MLKs dream.

Please be specific. I assume you are trying to get at the use of "n gger" by blacks, as an example of whites being oppressed. Well, this debate has been had a million times over. Suffice to say, certain language is only appropriate if you are a member of the group that it describes. Blacks can say "n gger," homosexuals can call each other "i love you," and you can call whites "cracker" or "beloved patriot" or "redneck."It's called reclamation. It's not rocket science.
EDIT: I fully support the rights of the intellectually disabled to reclaim "retard."

Stop using "retard" as an insult.
Are you saying that you're worried "developmentally challenged" is going to become a street slang insult?

I am not worried at all. I think it is a futile effort because people will find another name that will have the exact same meaning and derogatory tone.

I do not agree. Certain descriptors carry negative connotations. Think of n gger, beloved patriot, Chinaman, lovely human, ***, she-male. Simply replacing these negative words with neutral adjectives like black, Hispanic, Asian, Homosexual, Lesbian, trans woman drastically changes ones tone.
I see no reason why retard would be any different.
Part of tolerating or respecting someone is referring to them in the manner of their choosing. Most people with intellectual disabilities do not like being called "retard," and especially do not like the word's use when referring to able-minded people who may have done something stupid.
It's simply common courtesy to refrain from doing or saying offensive things, whether you agree that they are offensive or not.

So in the meantime would it kill you to drop the term "retard" as an insult from your lexicon?

Why do you think that? Is there another word with the exact same meaning and derogatory tone of "n gger?" Is there one that directly replaces "wise and beautiful woman?" Is there one for "lovely human?" The answer to these three questions is no.

Do you live under a rock or are this oblivious to the world?
Really? You cant think of any other words that can replace those above?

Kill me? No, but I doubt it will be dropped from my vocabulary either.

Special Olympics has started an initiative to end the use of the words "retard" and "retarded" with the End the R-Word Campaign. Special Olympics argues that by putting a stop to the r-word fosters a larger message of inclusion and acceptance, for those with intellectual disabilities, who have been one of the most socially isolated minorities.
Thoughts on the campaign? On putting a stop to the use of the r-word?
This campaign is retarded.
