Being an engineer in the power industry, this was a complete orgasm for me. Better yet, I'm currently employed by the company that formerly owned this plant (though has gone through a few name changes). This allows me to hear a lot of stories - both good and bad - from the much older guys here. Pretty cool stuff. One of the more senior persons here have been trying to gain access for us newbies (<7 years experience) to get in and get an unofficial tour, but it's quite difficult as you'd probably imagine. Safety is a huge concern. Anyways, said senior persons sent out a link this morning with pictures for an 'unofficial' tour. So f######## cool. Please leave your political stance on nukes at the door - this thread is for nerding out only. :awe:

I remember when LILCO built it. State/work of the art toggle switches and silk-screening.

I didn't see any radroaches. Someone probably already cleaned out all the stimpacks in that place.

Sorry to say it, but I wonder how long it will be before some pack of morons go in and start destroying stuff...and they have to lock it up.

I am no engineer by any stretch (unless you count Legos) but that is wicked cool. Not certain I could make it through without pushing at least one button... self control would be right out the window.

It's been locked up for years. It's not so easy to get to either as there is a neighboring gas turbine site and substation that has active security. Plus there's cameras everywhere. You could try though....

LOL..... I don't think a good chunk of them actually operate anything, but if it satisfies you go for it!

The unflipped calendar picture was a bit eerie to me.

Pretty neat, looks a lot like our nuke plant. Not often you can get that close to the reactor and other internals, though.

Clearly whoever wrote that doesn't have a lot of nuclear experience -- the control room is pretty standard. Nearly all nuclear power plant control rooms look like they came straight from the 70s.

Pretty awesome to see that kind of stuff. I'd love to take a tour of a nuclear plant, either a working one or decommissioned one. Chernobyl would actually be pretty awesome, I'd totally do it with the right equipment, well maybe not with the conflicts going on right now mind you.

That is cool. I only got to tour the Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant here in KS. I also work in the power engineering side of things. Was like being in a heavily armed prison, but was really cool.

Love this!

The coolest thing I ever did as a kid was get invited to a coal fire plant and hang out in the controll room. The equipment then was already old as shit in the early 80s and the couple of computers they had in there frankensteined into the old equipment was fascinating and reminded me of this when I saw the pictures.

Really cool! I would totally love going to a a late night VIP party in there. Everyone could dress up like fallout or stalker characters and you could do a really cool scavenger hunt that would end up like the ending of that Chernobyl movie.

Love that stuff. Seems like such a waste though. And the electronics hoarder in me wants to raid those panels for all the switches and lights and gauges and wiring and...you get the idea.

Old enough to have been inside an operating plant of that vintage (but Westinghouse pressurized water rather than GE boiling water). Those old control panels with all the wired pairs, annunciator lights, and contactors look pretty "stone age" now. I'm surprised that more of the metals haven't been scrapped out yet. Where did the spent fuel end up?

"Stone age" is still relevant.... this is pretty accurate:

Clearly whoever wrote that doesn't have a lot of nuclear experience -- the control room is pretty standard. Nearly all nuclear power plant control rooms look like they came straight from the 70s.

Why? Because it works. And yea, whoever wrote it doesn't have nuke experience... he's just scoping out potential movie locations I guess?

I've heard the spent fuel ended up somewhere in one of the Carolina's.

One of the turbines was actually auctioned off and I believe also ended up in one of the Carolina's at a plant there.

Awesome to check out. It's a shame we are so focused on solar and wind now and not the real solution, Nuclear.

True dat!

I would love to have a game reenactment in there. Like a paintball Call Of Duty or F.E.A.R battle.

I like gauges, switches and all that. I learned most of all the avionics in a 737 and would love to learn all the systems in a control room like that. Do they have a nuclear power plant simulator for Windows? LOL
