PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY

im in 200 a person we should be able to rent it.

Heh. This reminds me of when I was back in HS and into the paintball thing we used to get ~40 guys together and break into (it mostly consisted of driving around a gate) an abandoned cement plant on the river. Oh my god it was so fun. The river was on one side, then the plant was on flat ground, and the opposite side was a giant embankment. Sniping guys out from above was a great feeling.... especially when they have no idea where it came from. Good times.

Being an engineer in the power industry, this was a complete orgasm for me. Better yet, I'm currently employed by the company that formerly owned this plant (though has gone through a few name changes). This allows me to hear a lot of stories - both good and bad - from the much older guys here. Pretty cool stuff. One of the more senior persons here have been trying to gain access for us newbies (<7 years experience) to get in and get an unofficial tour, but it's quite difficult as you'd probably imagine. Safety is a huge concern. Anyways, said senior persons sent out a link this morning with pictures for an 'unofficial' tour. So f######## cool. Please leave your political stance on nukes at the door - this thread is for nerding out only. :awe:

I shared this with our City's main electrical engineer and I think he also had an Engineeringasm as he literally had the same reaction you did. lol

Our city has it's own steam boiler power plant and is actually getting ready to build a new Natural Gas based power plant ( 1 of like 10 in the world I think is what I was told). It's partially being built in Italy, being shipped here, then brought on Railroad cars as close to the City as possible, then brought in on semis the rest of the way.

I was doing research on the plant that we get our power from, for the most part. And it's one coal fired generator and they added about five years ago 5 GE gas turbines for peak hours.

I'm wondering what the difference is between these relatively small gas turbines and a full blown NG plant?

The damn gas turbines they have at the plant put out more power than the coal fired generator! They actually piped in from a main NG artery the NG gas.

Huh? Natural gas isn't anything new. What town is this?

You still use coal? At every one of our plants we still have the coal crusher house, conveyor belts that used to haul it into the plant and the entire system that fed it into the boiler. Really old, abandoned shit - cool stuff. I can't even imagine the work environment those guys had back then. What GE GT's do they have?

There's a ton of differences when you get into details, but the biggest one is the time it takes to start & shut down. The GT is essentially a jet engine - some fuel and some compressed air and you're good to go. A steam plant takes a lot of prepping to get the unit up and running.

Stillwater, OK

I think it's special just because of the way it's being built. I'll talk to that engineer today or tomorrow and see if that's the case. First time I've seen a municipality be responsible for power production. Although I'm sure it's been done elsewhere, where I am from, Arizona, this was not a practice that was used. Pretty cool stuff though.

I believe you know my line of work. I actually was about 6 feet from a nuclear reactor last week. Obviously, no fuel was in it, but everything else was present. Things were a bit more open than if the product was 100% complete, but it was still pretty cool.

PS the website doesn't work here D: >:-0

Did you have to go through all the screening/security/suiting up still even with no fuel?

Also, why am I not surprised the website doesn't work there? I'm sure a bunch of shit is blocked.

Well, yes & no. Could only enter that area with a certain security clearance level, which I already had... so nobody really "checked" me. Also, there was a military person there standing guard, but I didn't see a weapon of any kind, just a Walkie.

No suiting up because this particular reactor has yet to be actually started. Once it does, the area I was actually in will probably never be accessed again (not totally sure on that but I could have reached out and touched the thing if I wanted.. so..).

Yeah it's odd, maybe like 5 or 6 of the pictures ended up coming up, but most did not load. Pretty cool how the place literally looks like everybody just got up and left randomly. Reminds me of how places might look during a zombie apocalypse or something
