So - if available - the PC version would only be one DVD (whereas the platform versions need 2)?

Probably, CD's r still soooooo way cheaper. If a manufacturer can make 1000 cds for $20, but only 100 dvds for $20, (that is guestimation because of special logos (gold foil and such) and built in copy protection/serial, or other hoopties) you can be sure they'll opt for CD's. BUT, knowing there are hard-headed/hard-core gamers out there, they'll probably release about 5-7% DVD's, just so ALL the people can be happy, and a sale for slightly less money is still a sale to them. Or they may charge $5 more. We'll have to wait an see.

Plus non-tech peeps, whom have home-dvd players, usually don't opt to spend the extra cash to buy one for thier computer, unless it came with it, or they have a special need/set-up.

Because they are DVDs.
Ok then why do they need TWO DVDs?
(6x700=4.2 MB; less than 1 DVD's capacity)

EDIT: I got to answer ONE of my own questions:

Only $49.99 for PC

What does the Game Cube use for it's disc format?

Windows 95 came in like 48 floppies.

The install of Win 95 I had only used 13 floppies (3.5-inch). That 48 floppy version must have been 5 1/4-inch discs! Thats nuts!!

Oh for the love of God, it is time to move to DVD when you are using 6 CDs! Ya, maybe back in the day when very few people had DVD drives I could see not putting it out on DVD. But the game should come out on DVD and CDs now. 6 CDs is freakin' ridiculous! I bought Riven way back in the day and it was like 5-6 CDs, and let me tell you, IT WASN'T FUN! I had to freakin' switch out CDs everytime I went to a different part of the island. :| I loved it when they came out with the DVD version. ONE DVD and I could go wherever I wanted without switching discs. This game should come out on DVD, if you don't have one, tough, buy one!

agreed

Nah, it would be more like if I don't have a DVD drive, tough on the company that makes the game, because I'm definately not spending the money to buy one to play a game. And of course the company wants the game to be able to reach as many people as possible, so they put it on CD. A lot of people still don't have DVD roms.

I'm a huge Baldur's Gate fan, HUGE and I've got 12 CDs total between 1, 2, and the expansions(not counting the Darkest Day add-on 'cause it was a DL).. And I recall that you could send back the original 5 BG CD's and for a small charge (like 5 bucks maybe) you could get 'em on DVD. I never did that because I always did the full install anyway, but it was a neat thought.

Then you are not the target audience anyway. If you can't or won't spend $40 to buy a DVD drive, then you definitely won't buy the $100-300 video card it takes to play the game anyway, right? Not to mention the massive amounts of ram it's going to take to run newer games (512MB+), and let's not forget about a nice new processor to balance out your system. Oh, but to spend $40 for a DVD drive, THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!! You just do your little boycott of game companies for switching to a DVD format, we'll see how long you'll hold out. I'll give you until DoomIII comes out.

The Radeon8500, 512mb ram, and AthlonXP processor are necessary for doing anything on a computer. I need them to play all games, surf the net, whatever. I wouldn't buy a new piece of hardware to be able to play one or two games. When most games are on DVD, then I'll buy a DVD drive. But someone's gotta start it, I suppose, and releasing on both types of media is a good start.

Gamecube uses mini-dvd's, 1.47 or 2.2 gbs a piece I believe.
